Goal Setting, Self Improvement & Decision Making ? Words of ...

We know right from wrong, we know good from bad, so instinctively, all our decisions are made right away. It is when we begin to rationalize our decisions that we make the mistakes that we regret. Millionaires know the secrets to Goal Setting, Self Improvement & Decision Making, learn their Words of Wisdom:

? You will know you made the right decision because your body tells you it is the right decision, from the passion and the focus you get from making that decision.

? Choosing the right decision, opens the door to new options, once you have made that decision, the key to making that decision is sticking to it to make it right.

? Making a decision is a commitment to follow through because it truly brings out your own integrity.

? When you make a decision, you have to use your heart; you have to listen to your heart.

? Understanding you have to opportunity to make your own decisions is truly the key to success.

? Our inner strength and trust in our abilities to draw from all around and within to make decisions, actually provides the ability to make the decision.

? The ability to make a decision is leadership!

? We learn to make goals in our lives to attain success, the S.M.A.R.T. way to make goals in our lives is simple and goals must be: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely.

? Decisions often fall back on the attainment of goals by others ahead of us; most of our decisions are based on positive examples of people who have succeeded from similar decisions.

? Successful people make up their minds quickly and change their minds slowly. Unsuccessful people make up their minds slowly and change their minds quickly.

? Indecision leads to procrastination and can reinforce negativity.

? As you grow in personal/self development, you no longer need proof of success; self doubt fades and confidence in your decisions takes over, this is liberation.

? ?You don?t have to get it right, you just have to get it going.? ? Mike Litman

? The decision process includes quiet and allowing, but taking too much time to make a decision limits your time to make more decisions.

? Making decisions allow ourselves to make more decisions, with liberation from not being afraid of what we are going to decide and that is what will truly lead us Beyond Freedom!

So what decisions have you made in your life?

Have you made more good decisions than bad decisions?

If you have historically made more good decisions than bad decisions then learn from the wisdom that suggests we make decisions quickly and change our minds slowly because by making more decisions there will be more good decisions made.

Goal setting, a focus on self improvement & quick decision making are keys to success, use these words of wisdom to unlock your possibilities today!

Because YOU Deserve Money!

Factbox: Enbridge oil pipeline incidents

(Reuters) - The U.S. pipeline safety agency has launched an investigation into an oil spill in Wisconsin on Enbridge Inc's network that forced the shutdown of a section of a main artery carrying light sweet Canadian crude to Chicago-area refineries.

Enbridge's 318,000 barrel per day Line 14 pipeline, part of the Lakehead system, was shut on Friday after an estimated 1,200 barrels of oil were leaked.

The spill happened almost two years to the day after another major spill in a different section of the system, in Michigan, and marks the latest in a string of disruptions from the Canadian company in recent years.

Canada is the largest oil exporter to the United States and Enbridge's pipelines carry the lion's share of that crude.

The following lists Enbridge's pipeline spills and incidents over the last decade:

* June 2012 - Enbridge shuts 345,000 bpd Athabasca pipeline after 1,400 barrels of oil were spilled near Elk Point in northeast Alberta. The line was quickly restarted after the company was able to bypass the Elk Point pump station.

* March 2012 - Enbridge shuts the 318,000 bpd line 14/64 between Superior, Wisconsin, and Griffith, Indiana, after an SUV crashed into a pumping station near New Lenox, Illinois.

* September 2011 - Enbridge shuts Line 26, a 25,000 bpd oil pipeline running from Berthold, North Dakota, to Steelman, Saskatchewan, for one day after about 20 barrels of oil were spilled from a pumping station at Berthold.

* May 2011 - Enbridge estimates between 700 and 1,500 barrels of oil spilled from the 39,400 bpd Norman Wells pipeline south of Wrigley, Northwest Territories.

* November 2010 - Throughput on the 670,000 bpd Line 6A, which feeds Midwest refineries and the key Cushing, Oklahoma, crude oil hub, reduced after a problem with a power disruption from a local utility in Lockport, Illinois.

* September 2010 - Enbridge closed its 70,000 bpd Line 10, which runs from Westover, Ontario, to New York state, while the company investigated a small leak. It was quickly restarted when it was determined to be leak-free.

* September 2010 - Enbridge closed Line 6A for eight days after it leaked 6,100 barrels of crude near Romeoville, Illinois.

* July 2010 - Enbridge shut its 290,000-bpd Line 6B, which runs from Griffiths, Indiana, to Sarnia, Ontario, on July 26 after a rupture near Marshall, Michigan, spilled about 20,000 barrels into the Kalamazoo River system.

* January 2010: An Enbridge pipeline leaked around 3,000 barrels of crude near Neche, North Dakota. Authorities ordered Enbridge to reduce pressures on the line, and in a letter to Enbridge, raised concerns over the strength of some of its pipeline seams.

* November 2007: Two workers were killed after an Enbridge-operated pipeline caught fire in northern Minnesota. The same line had recently been repaired. Following the incident, which resulted in a pipeline closure, up to 20 percent of U.S. crude imports were temporarily halted. Enbridge was fined for having allowed pressure on the pipeline to exceed recommended limits.

* January 2007: A spill on an Enbridge line transporting Canadian crude to Chicago leaked around 1,190 barrels in rural Wisconsin. About a month later, and further north, the pipeline spilled 2,976 barrels after a construction crew broke the line.

* 2005: Enbridge spilled more than 9,825 barrels of oil in several incidents over the year, according to National Wildlife Federation data compiling spill volumes. Most oil was quickly contained by Enbridge.

* June 2003: Enbridge spilled around 452 barrels in Wisconsin's Nemadji River, and additional crude spilled from an Enbridge terminal was contained.

* July 2002: 6,000 barrels spilled from an Enbridge pipeline into marshlands near Cohasset, Minnesota.

Children's Health & Fitness ? Obesity Is A Health Hazard!

July 26th, 2012 by Len Saunders

From Wall Africa?..

Being obese or overweight might be seen as something that is acceptable but have you ever wondered just how much it affects the young body?

Dietician Karlien Gous says the World Health Organisation (WHO) defines obesity as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to ones health.

Obesity has different classifications, this is how the medical profession will determine not only if a person is obese/ overweight but also the level of obesity.

?The main reason one develops obesity and overweight is an energy imbalance between calories consumed and calories expended. It has been shown that globally there are an increased intake of energy-dense foods that are high in fat, salt and sugars but low in vitamins, minerals and other micronutrients,? she says.

Ones chances of being obese have been increased by a decrease in the amount of physical exercise due to many forms of work and changing modes of transportation amongst other things.

Changes in dietary and physical activity patterns are often the result of environmental and societal changes.

Gous further notes that as more and more fast food options are becoming available in urban as well as rural areas, there is an increase in obesity among younger children.

?Overweight and obesity are major risk factors for a number of chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

With the increase of overweight younger people, we see in the medical field an increase of these chronic diseases at a younger age.

USDA says drought will push up food prices in 2013

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? The federal government is projecting the record drought gripping half the U.S. will help push food prices up by 3 percent to 4 percent next year.

Figures released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture on Wednesday show that beef prices are expected to see the biggest jump at 4 percent to 5 percent. Dairy product prices are expected to climb 3.5 percent to 4.5 percent. And poultry prices are expected to rise 3 percent to 4 percent.

USDA economist Richard Volpe says these are the agency's first food price projections to factor in the drought. Corn, soybean and other commodity prices are soaring.

Meat and poultry are the most affected because feed prices represent the biggest part of their cost of production. Processed food prices are less affected.

The Origins Of Feminism . - Small Business Branding

As is well known on our planet since ancient times and still reigns patriarchy. For many centuries, women are on the minor roles compared with men. She was deprived of many rights, could not get an education without could participate in elections. Men banned from women's active lifestyle, set in a financially dependent on you. Most of the differences between men and women associated with the millennial conditioning. Women mind is depressed man who made her his slave, turned it into a secondary citizen in the world. He knows that she is beautiful, it knows that its independence is a threat to him. had to wear a burqa and hide your face so that no one but her husband could not see the beauty of their faces, the depth of their eyes. You may find that Elmira can contribute to your knowledge.

In Hinduism, a woman should die after her husband. What a great zeal! He owned it all my life, but even after his death, he wants to possess her. After the death of anything can happen. She can find another partner, perhaps even more worthy than he. And what happened in Europe during the Middle Ages. This refers to the "holy" Inquisition, with its "witch hunt". They condemned the word "witch", and that's one of the revered words. This word simply means "witch" - a wise woman.

It comes from the word "Veda", ie, to "know". But in the Middle Ages, Christianity was confronted with danger. It turned out that thousands of Women were much wiser than the bishops, cardinals and the Pope.

Annie & Auggie Reassigned - Covert Affairs Season 3 Reality | The ...

Goodness, how time flies when you?re having fun watching your fav TV shows. It?s a year since our first review of the television series Covert Affairs, the spy action show out of America about a career cover girl working undercover for the CIA. Annie Walker, aka Piper Peribo, who is posing as a Curator for the Smithsonian Institute while being heavily involved in all sorts of exciting clandestine affairs. Being involved in the arts has never been more fun. She has, for the first two seasons, had the fab Ex CIA special operative, the very cute heart-crusher August ?Auggie? Anderson aka Christopher Gorham as her guide and mentor in life. Their friendship and relationship has been built up to become the heart and soul of the show ? just seeing how they reconcile their feelings for one another each week has gained a huge fan following.

Now in Season 3, reports our American correspondent, Covert Affairs has had an unexpected surprise and a shockingly explosive beginning, one that knocks everyone left of centre with the death of one of their closest colleagues. This means that everything is definitely set to change and as ?change? is the topic of the moment, we can only hope that all will be well. After this shocking event Annie and Auggie are both immediately re-assigned and so starts the season writers and producers hope will have us all on the edge of our seats. Annie has shown us up until now that she has all the abilities a good secret agent needs; endurance, tenacity, loyalty, courage, honesty, integrity, persistence and a firm conviction that she is on the right side of both the law and the truth. But what is truth when you are working for an agency that is all about telling lies? Sometimes the lines between their reality and fantasy can become blurred. And what if your reality is very different from everyone else?s, including your sisters ?

How do you know who your real friends are and if the love that you feel is real if that relationship has never been tested?

Well it seems the star-crossed Annie and Auggie are both destined to find out, but let?s hope the all new escapades and sexcapades they embark on don?t fail to keep them safe. In Episode 1 of Series 3 Annie and Auggie are now working for different departments and this will test their mettle and their former, and current set of skills, as both friends and agents on every level. In episodes 1, 2 and 3 already aired, the pace the writers are setting is a cracker.

?We owe it to the audience to remind them from time to time that there is real jeopardy here,? says executive producer Matt Corman when interviewed about the July 10 jaw-dropping season opener. ?Working as a CIA operative has real stakes.?

Losing the very handsome Jai Wilcox (Sendhil Ramamurthy) has certainly been a ?reality? check for all the different heads of departments in the agency and its operatives in more ways than one.? Jai?s explosive death propels Annie into asking the questions that have been on her mind and these will be revealed in her behavior throughout Season 3. However, is she now going to make bigger mistakes than ever before?

Annie embarks on an affair with her new target, the handsome? Simon (Richard Coyle), whom she bonds with while comparing ?I?ve been everywhere? passport stamps and when surviving a sandstorm together in the desert.

He?s a suspected assassin with a suspicious tattoo on his left rear shoulder, who certainly has a great deal of charm and seemingly many secrets and their suspected suspicion of each other is very appealing. He loves her brave leaping out into the storm and cleverness as she stuffs the exhaust pipe of the car with her top so that sand won?t stop it from re-starting. We also find out that she?s prepared to follow this mysterious man from Morocco to Munich in search of the truth shedding clothes, inhibitions and her once intact moral code along the way. Her much loved boyfriend in Season 1 it seems has entirely left the scene.

Auggie on the other hand, dealing with the stress and trauma of what has happened as well, is taking off for Africa to propose to his Peace Keeping girlfriend Parker, because he realizes time may just be running out for him as well. This becomes far more urgent after he and Annie are separated by bad guys when they go undercover together as man and wife.

Not being able to see what is happening around you in reality is problematic for this cute, but in reality blind CIA agent. Especially when negotiating Gaudi designed staircases. In episode 3 Auggie?s captured and taken hostage by pirates so he could be right about being near to death!

On a lighter note the job certainly has some sensational perks.

The production in the first few episodes has already taken the cast to exotic Morocco, Puerto Rico and Barcelona, where the amazing architecture of Spain?s fav historidcal architect features, and ?we have Moscow and the Dominican Republic planned,? says Corman?s fellow exec producer Chris Ord in a recent interview. ?We?re also hoping to do Dubai. It?s a spy show; people expect to go abroad, and that we are able to is really exciting.?

There?s also a new strong woman on the scene, Lena Smith (Sarah Clarke) who is an all new sparring partner for Joan aka Kari Matchett, taking some of the heat of Arthur (Peter Gallagher), Joan?s husband and the beleagured head of the Department that they all work for.

The new girl on the block is somewhat unorthodox in her approach and is busy ruffling a lot of feathers as people are pulled in all sorts of directions. Lena is ?cool? and unlike Joan asks Annie to work with her, not for her, and tomake her own choices. This seems to be empowering Annie?s confidence and abilities.

Will this ultimately lead to success or should operatives stay within the agency?s protocol and the rules that after all, they were put in place to protect them.

Certainly NCIS agents learned Agent Gibbs rules the hard way, so does this mean that our our CIA agents are still in their learning phase, with so much more to know before they can say they have ?matured?? It will certainly help the producers to start all new story lines again? Can?t help thinking that the whole of this ten part season will hinge on that tell tale tattoo on Simon?s shoulder, which provides a point of interest for a huge arc in backstory telling.

What was Jai trying to say to Annie when they met before he was eliminated? Successful TV shows out of America that have matured know now that having a huge back story that all the viewers for a while know more about than the characters, who do catch up at some point, is the way to keep the interest and each series alive and on air.

It is a formula proven to work, as does building important and sound relationships with their characters who are just as frail and even pathetic sometimes as the rest of us. We all get hooked, reeled in and landed, especially by career cover girl Annie?s new and raw emotional vulnerability.

So if you haven?t up until now it?s time to hop on board the Annie and Auggie show ? Covert Affairs, the one trying to sort out what makes or breaks relationships, real or otherwise Season 3 is your chance.

Discovery of new heart failure trigger could change the way cardiovascular drugs are made

ScienceDaily (July 18, 2012) ? In their quest to treat cardiovascular disease, researchers and pharmaceutical companies have long been interested in developing new medicines that activate a heart protein called APJ. But researchers at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute (Sanford-Burnham) and the Stanford University School of Medicine have now uncovered a second, previously unknown, function for APJ -- it senses mechanical changes when the heart is in danger and sets the body on a course toward heart failure. This means that activating APJ could actually be harmful in some cases -- potentially eye-opening information for some heart drug makers.

The study appears July 18 in Nature.

"Just finding a molecule that activates APJ is not enough. What's important to heart failure is not if this receptor is 'on' or 'off,' but the way it's activated," said Pilar Ruiz-Lozano, Ph.D., who led the study. Ruiz-Lozano, formerly assistant professor at Sanford-Burnham, is now associate professor of pediatrics in the Stanford University School of Medicine and adjunct faculty member at Sanford-Burnham.

Stretching the heart

APJ is a receptor that sits on the cell surface in many organs, where it senses the external environment. When a hormone called apelin comes along and binds APJ, it sets off a molecular chain reaction that influences a number of cellular functions. Many previous studies have shown that apelin-APJ activity directs beneficial processes such as embryonic heart development, maintenance of normal blood pressure, and new blood vessel formation.

According to Ruiz-Lozano's latest study, however, APJ can also be activated a second, more harmful, way that doesn't involve apelin. In this pathway, APJ senses and responds to mechanical changes in the heart.

To better understand these mechanical changes, let's look at a person with high blood pressure. In this case, the person's heart has to work harder to pump the same amount of blood at the same rate as a healthy person. To meet the increased demand, individual heart muscle cells start making more proteins, making the cells bigger. Eventually, cell membranes stretch and each cell begins to pull away from its neighbor. This leads to an enlarged heart -- a condition known as hypertrophy. In pathological (disease) conditions, hypertrophy can lead to heart failure.

APJ and heart failure

The best way to determine the role a protein plays in a particular cellular process is to see what happens when it's missing. To do this, Ruiz-Lozano's team, including co-first authors Maria Cecilia Scimia, Ph.D. and Cecilia Hurtado, Ph.D., used mice that lack APJ. Under everyday conditions, the APJ-deficient mice appeared perfectly normal. However, unlike their normal counterparts, the mice lacking APJ couldn't sense danger when their hearts enlarged. As a result, mice were actually healthier without APJ -- none succumbed to heart failure.

"In other words, without APJ, ignorance is bliss -- the heart doesn't sense the danger and so it doesn't activate the hypertrophic pathways that lead to heart failure," Ruiz-Lozano said. "This tells us that, depending on how it's done, activating APJ might make matters worse for heart disease patients."

Sinking social news site Digg bought for $500K by NYC firm Betaworks

Digg, once one of the shining stars of the social media world, is now a sad shell of of its former self. The once mighty news-sharing service founded by Kevin Rose, has just been snatched up by a small New York City firm called Betaworks for a paltry $500,000, according to the Wall Street Journal. The site still draws roughly seven million visitors a month, but that's a far cry from the more than 30 million is was pulling in during its 2008 heyday. And the pocket change paid for the property pales in comparison to the over $45 million it raised from investors over its lifetime. The sale follows the departure of its most high profile exec, the aforementioned Rose, who is now in charge of Google Ventures. Betaworks plans to revitalize the brand involve folding it into News.me, another social news service, which launched in April of last year. The deal only includes the property itself and the brand -- none of Digg's remaining employees will be making the move to Betaworks. Of course, there were very few left once the Washington Post subsidiary Social Code hired 15 engineers from the floundering service, which accounted for more than half of its workforce.

Minnesota officials bemoan deer stand 'mansions'

(AP) ? Some Minnesota hunters are upgrading their deer stands, trading the traditional nailed-together hunks of wood for what one official calls "mansions" in trees on public property.

St. Louis County officials are seeing deer stands ? platforms perched in trees to help hunters more easily spot deer ? with stairways, decks, shingled roofs, commercial windows, insulation, propane heaters, carpeting, lounge chairs, tables and even the occasional generator, the Duluth News Tribune reported Sunday (http://bit.ly/Lzie7J).

Some hunters have even planted crops near their stands in hopes of attracting deer, said St. Louis County Land Commissioner Bob Krepps. He said hunters have also cut down trees near their stand to improve sight lines.

"We're getting overbuilt," Krepps said. "We're seeing mansions out there ? basically hunting shacks on stilts."

Private landowners can do what they want, Krepps said, but tax-forfeited land makes up nearly 1 million acres of county forest, and is supposedly open to all hunters. Hunters who customize stands in these areas are inappropriately claiming public land as their own, he said.

"A lot of these cross the line of what's appropriate," Krepps said. "If I'm out walking and come across one of these buildings on posts, am I going to feel welcome to hunt there? Probably not. And if I do, there's likely to be a fight. That shouldn't happen on land that belongs to everyone."

One deer stand was 18 feet wide and 20 feet long; county officials said it was more like a cabin. And officials have even found some stands on public property with locks on the doors.

Traditional wooden stands are often abandoned to rot in the woods. That gets more complicated with new, sometimes elaborately manufactured stands that include plastic, metal and shingles, which aren't biodegradable "and really leave a mess in the woods," said Jason Meyer, a forest manager for the county.

Pet hotel thrives as Koreans seek canine companions

THEY ALSO DESERVE PAMPERING. Pet hotels are a booming business even in the United States. Screen grab from YouTubeTHEY ALSO DESERVE PAMPERING. Pet hotels are a booming business even in the United States. Screen grab from YouTube

SEOUL, South Korea - Checking into one of Seoul's newest luxury clinics just because your companion needs a shower may seem extravagant, but Cho Hang-Min said he had no other choice.

"Other places won't do it," said Cho, a student, explaining why he and his Border Collie have stopped off at Irion.

The two-storey establishment in the city's wealthy Gangnam district is a luxury hotel and clinic for pampered pets -- a rising trend in South Korea where dogs were once treated as guard animals or as something to eat.

These days younger Koreans are spending more on their pets, enabling the rise of a high-end industry out to ensure that canine companions are just as pampered as their style-conscious owners.

Irion, which means "Come here" in Korean, opened in February 2011 as a one-stop complex offering a veterinary clinic, grooming salon, cafe, shop, daycare centre, an exercise area and "hotel" rooms for dogs and cats.

"I opened Irion because I saw the demand in the industry, to keep pace with the growing animal companion culture in Korea as the economy develops," Park So-Yeon, head of the DBS company which runs the facility, told AFP.

"These facilities are necessities, not luxuries, for people raising animals. Unfortunately I couldn't find facilities good enough to feel safe and satisfied before I opened Irion."

Irion offers 36 rooms of varying sizes and high-end clinical equipment including computer tomography, X-ray and ultrasound machines. At the front door a shop sells everything from snacks to pet strollers.

Hotel fees range from 40,000 won ($35.26) to 200,000 won a night.

"People say it's nonsensical to spend all that money on animals, but we provide daily health checkups, a hygienic environment, large hotel rooms and an exercise area and I'm pretty sure this is not a high price," said Park.

"And as for the clinic, we have vet specialists for different body parts, even a herbal medicine vet and high-technology equipment that smaller hospitals don't possess."

Despite the price, Park said about 2,000 dogs and cats come to Irion every month for all sorts of services. During the summer vacation season, rooms are booked out.

Cho, 19, was not quibbling about cost after reclaiming his newly fragrant pooch. "The hospital is big and clean...I like it here and plan to come here once every two weeks to shower my dog," he said.

Another patron, Lee Ji-Hyun, said price was not a problem in return for good care. "Services are great and my babies love the place," she said of her two Maltese terriers and a Yorkshire terrier.

Off the menu

Increasingly affluent and urbanised South Koreans in recent decades have been cherishing dogs as companions.

The state-run Rural Development Administration estimates the pet dog industry was worth 1.8 trillion won ($1.58 billion) as of 2010 and growing at an average annual rate of 11%.

Nearly 20% of households have pets, according to official statistics, with about 95% of them owning dogs. But Park thinks the country still has some way to go.

"Korea is relatively slow in pet industry growth because it has unique traditions, such as raising animals out of the house, and some other extreme ones," she said, referring to eating dogmeat.

"But those are changing nowadays."

Eating dogs is a longstanding custom. But growing numbers of Koreans oppose the practice and consider it an international embarrassment.

In June last year the Korea Dog Farmers' Association cancelled a planned dogmeat festival following protests from animal rights activists.

The Rural Development Administration said Koreans have begun seeing dogs as partners for life rather than toys and started treating them as family members.

Park said there is still room for improvement in petiquette (pet etiquette) such as always using a lead outdoors and training dogs to behave.

"Owners still need to learn petiquette because I don't think we are quite there yet in terms of animal culture compared to other countries like the US and Japan," she said.

"What's so sad is that even up to now the largest number of dogs and cats are being adopted at Christmas and Children's Day...people must consider whether they are responsible enough to raise animals."

Park now operates four Irion multi-complexes and four which provide only veterinary treatment. She says she plans to open more in coming months. - Agence France-Presse

RALEIGH -- The man who was shot by a fellow soldier on Fort Bragg last week will be laid to rest in Texas Thursday. Lt. Col. Roy Tisdale was shot last Thursday by Spc. Ricky Elder during a safety briefing while on post.

Tisdale took command of the 525 Brigade Special Troops Battalion in January and spent close to two decades serving his country. He served in both Iraq and Afghanistan but his family says with all his deployments, they never thought something would happen to him in the United States.

"You never expect especially one soldier against another, that type of violence," said Hope Mills resident Bob Alcott. "I don't know another way to feel about it other than just shock. I still kind of think a lot of people are in disbelief about it."

Elder also shot another solider before turning the gun on himself. The other solider survived the shooting. Elder later died.

All three soldiers were stationed in the 525 Battlefield Surveillance Brigade.

Meanwhile, support for Tisdale's friends and family continue to pour in.

"This unfortunately is when you find out who your real family is and we've got them coming from all over the world," said Charles Tisdale, the brother of the victim.

Thursday's funeral will be held at at 2 p.m. at a church in Texas. He will then be buried at the Aggie Field of Honor in College Station with full military honors.

Tisdale is survived by his wife and two children.

"The children bury their parents, but you don't bury the children," said his wife, Linda Tisdale.

2 ex-Argentine dictators convicted in baby thefts

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) ? Former Argentine dictator Jorge Rafael Videla was convicted and sentenced to 50 years Thursday for executing a systematic plan to steal babies from prisoners who were kidnapped, tortured and killed during the military junta's war on leftist dissenters three decades ago.

Argentina's last dictator, Reynaldo Bignone, also was convicted and received a 15-year sentence.

The baby thefts set Argentina's 1976-1983 regime apart from all the other juntas that ruled in Latin America at the time. Videla and the rest of the junta were determined to remove any trace of the armed leftist guerrilla movement that they said threatened the country's future.

The "dirty war" eventually claimed 13,000 victims according to official records. Many of them were pregnant women who gave birth in clandestine maternity wards.

Videla testified that there was no systematic plan to remove babies, and accused jailed women of using their unborn children as "human shields" in their fight against the state.

Nine others, mostly former military and police officials, also were accused in the trial, which focused on 34 baby thefts. Seven were convicted and two were found not guilty.

Witnesses included former U.S. diplomat Elliot Abrams, who was called to testify after his long-classified memo describing a secret meeting with Argentina's ambassador was made public at the request of the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo, a human rights group whose evidence-gathering efforts were key to the trial.

Abrams testified from Washington that he secretly urged Bignone to reveal the stolen babies' identities as a way to smooth Argentina's return to democracy.

"We knew that it wasn't just one or two children," Abrams testified, suggesting in his testimony that there must have been some sort of directive from a high level official ? "a plan, because there were many people who were being murdered or jailed."

No such effort at reconciliation was made. Instead, Bignone ordered the military to destroy evidence of "dirty war" activities. The junta denied any knowledge of baby thefts, let alone responsibility for the disappearances of political prisoners. The U.S. government also revealed little of what it knew as the junta's death squads eliminated opponents.

The Grandmothers group has since used DNA evidence to help 106 people who were stolen from prisoners as babies recover their true identities. Many of them were raised by military officials or their allies, who falsified their birth names in an effort to remove any hint of their leftist origins.

The group estimates as many as 500 babies could have been stolen in all, but the destruction of documents and passage of time make it impossible to know for sure.

Videla, 86, received the maximum sentence as the man criminally responsible for 20 of the thefts.

He and Bignone, 84, already are serving life sentences for other crimes against humanity. They are being kept behind bars despite an Argentine law that usually permits criminals over 70 to serve sentences at home.

Others convicted and their sentences included former Adm. Antonio Vanek, 40 years; former marine Jorge "Tigre" Acosta, 30; former Gen. Santiago Omar Riveros, 20; former navy prefect Juan Antonio Azic, 14; and Dr. Jorge Magnacco, who witnesses said handled some of the births, 10.

A couple who adopted one of the babies, former Capt. Victor Gallo and his ex-wife Susana Colombo, were sentenced to 15 and five years in jail, respectively. Their adopted son, Francisco Madariaga, testified against them and said he hoped their sentences would set an example.

Retired Adm. Ruben Omar Franco and a former intelligence agent, Eduardo Ruffo, were absolved.

According to Argentine judicial procedure, the basis for the convictions and sentences won't be revealed until Sept. 17, said the president of the judicial tribunal, Maria del Carmen Roqueta.
