MidAmerican to buy 2 Calif. wind farms

MidAmerican Energy has agreed to buy two wind projects under construction about 120 miles north of Los Angeles from the wind developer Terra-Gen Power.

Terms of the sale were not disclosed.

The two projects, totaling 300 megawatts of peak electric capacity, will be part of the larger Alta Wind Energy Center located in Tehachapi, Calif., much of which is already in operation.

MidAmerican, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., said Sunday it will sell the electricity to Southern California Edison under long-term power purchase agreements.

In typical conditions, the projects will produce enough electricity to meet the demand of about 80,000 homes.

MidAmerican Energy Holdings Co. serves electric customers in Iowa, Illinois, South Dakota and Nebraska and it also controls a subsidiary called MidAmerican Renewables that operates wind, solar, geothermal and hydro-electric plants and sells that power to other utilities. Terra-Gen Power is a private company based in New York City.

Wind developers are scrambling to get wind projects underway this year in order to qualify for a federal wind subsidy that is slated to expire at the end of the year. President Barack Obama wants Congress to extend the subsidy but his Republican challenger Mitt Romney and some members of Congress want to allow it to lapse.

Wind power has struggled to compete in recent years because low natural gas prices have made reduced wholesale electric power prices, reducing the amount of revenue a wind turbine can generate. Without the federal subsidy, construction of wind projects is expected to slow dramatically, at least until power prices begin to rise.

The wind subsidy, known as the production tax credit, is worth $22 for every megawatt-hour of electricity generated by a wind farm during its first 10 years of operation. For MidAmerican's new wind farms, that would amount to about $19 million per year, or $190 million in total.

New pathogen epidemic identified in sub-Saharan Africa

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Researchers have found that the spread of a dangerous bacteria that can be fatal in up to 45% of people infected in sub-Sahara Africa may have been instigated by the emergence and spread of HIV in Africa. The study also found that one of the major contributing factors for the successful spread of the disease -- non-Typhoidal Salmonella (iNTS) -- was the acquisition of genes that afford resistance to several front line drugs used to treat blood-borne infection such as iNTS.

A new study out September 30 reveals that the emergence and spread of a rapidly evolving invasive intestinal disease, that has a significant mortality rate (up to 45%) in infected people in sub-Saharan Africa, seems to have been potentiated by the HIV epidemic in Africa.

The team found that invasive non-Typhoidal Salmonella (iNTS) disease is caused by a new form of the bacteria Salmonella Typhimurium that has spread from two different focal hubs in Southern and Central Africa beginning 52 and 35 years ago, respectively. They also found that one of the major contributing factors for the successful spread of iNTS was the acquisition of genes that afford resistance to several front line drugs used to treat blood-borne infection such as iNTS.

iNTS is a blood-borne infection that kills approximately one of four people in sub-Saharan Africa who catch it. Yet, in the rest of the world, NTS is a leading cause of acute inflammatory diarrhea that is self-limiting and tends to be fatal in less than 1 per cent of people infected. The disease is more severe in sub-Saharan Africa than the rest of the world because of factors such as malnutrition, co-infection with malaria or HIV and potentially the novel genotype of the Salmonella bacteria.

"The immune system susceptibility provided by HIV, malaria and malnutrition at a young age, may provide a population in sub-Saharan Africa that is large enough for this detrimental pathogen to enter, adapt, circulate and thrive," says Chinyere Okoro, joint first author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. "We used whole genome sequencing to define a novel lineage of Salmonella Typhimurium that is causing a previously unrecognised epidemic across the region. Its genetic makeup is evolving into a more typhoid like bacteria, able to efficiently spread around the human body"

From sequenced samples, the team created a phylogenetic or 'family tree', depicting the pathogen's evolution, dating when each sample first emerged and overlaying this with geographical information about where these samples came from. They found that this invasive disease comprises of two very closely related waves; the first wave originated from a possible south-eastern hub, about 52 years ago and the second originated about 35 years ago, possibly from the Congo Basin.

"The HIV epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa is thought to have begun in a central region and underwent expansion eastwards, a strikingly similar dynamic to that observed for second iNTS wave," says Dr Robert Kingsley, joint first author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. "Our findings suggest the current epidemic of iNTS and its transmission across sub-Saharan Africa may have been potentiated by an increase in the critical population of susceptible, immune-compromised people."

The team identified that the vast majority of samples from the second wave of iNTS contains a gene that makes them resistant to chloramphenicol, a frontline antibiotic in the treatment of Salmonella. This gene was not present in the samples from the first wave of iNTS. This observation suggests that iNTS acquired this gene early on in the evolution of the second wave, probably around the time of its spread from the Congo basin.

"Because it acquired resistance to chloramphenicol, this pathogen has much greater opportunity to survive and spread across the region," says Professor Gordon Dougan, lead author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. "This is the first time that the power of whole-genome sequencing has been used to track the spread of iNTS. Our research highlights the power this approach has to monitor the emergence and spread of dangerous pathogens both locally and globally over time."

"There has been some evidence that this disease can be passed from human to human. Now the race is on to discover how NTS is actually transmitted in sub-Saharan Africa so that effective intervention strategies can be implemented."

Palestinian man shot by Israeli troops near Gaza border

Israeli Defense Forces fired on Palestinians near the Gaza border on Friday, killing one.

Palestinian medical officials told Agence France Presse that the man who died was a fisherman named Fahmi Abu Rayash. His brother was also wounded, and they were brought into Beit Lahiya hospital late on Friday morning.

Hamas officials claimed that 22-year-old Rayash was killed while fishing on the beach in the Gaza Strip, Reuters reported.

There were conflicting claims from the Israeli and Palestinian sides, with a spokesman for the IDF saying they were not aware of an incident involving soldiers firing upon a fisherman.

Reuters noted, "Israeli army patrols deem the Gaza border area off limits because militants try to attack them by planting explosive devices or shooting at them."

The IDF troops said they fired on the suspects' legs as they allegedly approached the Gaza - Israel border on Friday.

An IDF spokesman said, "We initiated the stop-suspect-procedure, calling out for them to stop. Verbal warnings were ignored," according to The Jerusalem Post.

In a separate incident, an Israeli Navy boat fired shots near a Palestinian boat that strayed into sea waters that are off limits, said an IDF spokesman.

AFP noted that Israel imposes a strict maritime blockade of the Gaza Strip.

China party ready to make decisions on new leaders

BEIJING (AP) ? China's tumultuous, bizarre year in politics appears headed for a home stretch, with leading members of the ruling Communist Party convening to finalize a list of new leaders and decide the fate of a disgraced colleague.

A highly anticipated meeting of the decision-making Politburo is expected to take place as early as Friday, party-connected academics and analysts said. Afterward, state media are expected to announce dates for a party congress, a pivotal event to install the new leadership.

Dates for the congress, which is held once every five years in mid-October, are overdue. Dates for the past three congresses were all announced in late August.

The delay is yet another sign of disarray over a power transition that has become fractious despite party leaders' attempts to display public unity.

"Is it unprecedented? No. Is it unusual? Yes," former U.S. deputy secretary of state Richard Armitage said of the delay.

"It just introduces questions among people who are watching China and wondering what's going on," Armitage said at an academic forum this week in Washington.

Disgraced Politburo member Bo Xilai has been the focal point of much of the tumult, which has featured a murder, corruption, two high-profile trials and a deadly car crash, all of which exposed bare-knuckled infighting among a leadership that prefers secrecy.

The turmoil was set off when a trusted Bo aide disclosed that his boss's wife had murdered a British businessman. Bo was sacked as party chief of the city of Chongqing; his wife, Gu Kailai, was given a suspended death sentence after confessing to the murder; and the aide, Chongqing police chief Wang Lijun, received a 15-year prison term for initially covering up the murder and other misdeeds.

The trials of Wang, which wrapped up this week, and Gu, which finished earlier, cleared the way for the party to decide whether to charge Bo with criminal wrongdoing. But his ouster from the leadership early this year opened a window into the divisive jostling for power as president and party leader Hu Jintao prepares to retire to make way for younger leaders.

One of Hu's top lieutenants was shunted aside last month, a half-year after his son died crashing his Ferrari, a sign of corruption. Hu's anointed successor, Vice President Xi Jinping, dropped from sight for two weeks this month for reasons unexplained. Retired top leader Jiang Zemin reappeared at a theatrical performance this week, in what was seen as a public showing of his continued ? and for his rivals unwelcomed ? influence over appointments and policy making.

Meanwhile, the government is grappling with a rapidly slowing economy and a bitter territorial dispute with Japan that sparked violent street protests and is having an impact on trade ties. Labor unrest, a growing urban middle class, and anger over corruption and illegal land seizures are fueling demands for reform.

Given all the tumult, it's little wonder that planning for the congress might have been disrupted, said Liu Shanying, a political scientist at the government's Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

"In view of some uncertainties both at home and abroad, such as the dispute (with Japan), it's quite understandable if we see a bit of a delay because agreements need to be reached over some major issues," Liu said.

While the party does not publicly announce Politburo meetings in advance, foreign diplomats and party members working in state media and at a Beijing university say they have been informed verbally of its convening. They said it would be held either Friday or over the weekend.

Though the announcement of the congress dates may seem small,

Behind the scenes, the Politburo will do much more than approve the congress dates. It is expected to approve the slate of leaders and senior military commanders who for the next decade will guide China, the world's second-largest economy and an increasingly assertive diplomatic and military power.

The Politburo decisions set in train a series of events. The 204-member Central Committee, a cross-section of the national party elite, usually convenes about a week before the congress to approve decisions already made by the Politburo. Privately, the committee will approve the incoming leaders and a policy blueprint for the next five years. Publicly, they are expected to announce the party's decision on Bo.

Rank-and-file delegates to the party congress, which is a mostly ceremonial event, have not been told when the congress will be held. Beijing delegate Yu Dan, a noted Confucian scholar, has yet to receive any notice about when to be ready, she said through an assistant.

But signs that the congress is nearing have abounded in recent days. State media are running special newspaper sections and television news segments welcoming the congress. Speaking at the United Nations on Thursday, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said the congress would be held "soon."

"We are confident that this important meeting will lead China's reform, opening-up and modernization drive to a new stage," Yang said.

Cameron leads British hunt for business in Brazil

BRASILIA (Reuters) - British Prime Minister David Cameron had oil and sports on his mind when he visited Brazil this week seeking business opportunities in the South American nation that overtook Britain last year to become the world's No. 6 economy.

With the European Union in a slump, Cameron has turned to emerging BRIC nations - Brazil, Russia, India and China - as alternative markets for British exports and investments, with little to show so far.

With executives from 45 leading British companies in tow, Cameron met on Friday with Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, who invited British businesses to invest in Brazil oil and gas, defense, mining and financial services industries.

"I think we can do a lot better," Rousseff said of growing but still negligible trade and investment flows between the two countries.

Rousseff said British interest in Brazil had come at the right time after her government announced last month a $66 billion investment in road and railway building as part of a massive plan to upgrade her country's dilapidated infrastructure, which includes modernizing ports and airports.

Following the success of the London Olympics this summer, Rousseff said Brazil was seeking British cooperation to prepare for the 2014 Soccer World Cup and the 2016 Olympics Games.

Cameron said British companies had signed more than $161 million in deals during his two-day visit, with another $400 million in potential contracts for companies that can help Brazil get ready for the two global sporting events it will host.

Earlier on Friday in Rio de Janeiro, accompanied by British companies hoping for a slice of Brazil's enormous energy potential, Cameron met with Maria das Gracas Foster, the president of Brazil's largest company, the state-led Petrobras.

Foster laid out the oil company's $236 billion investment plan for the next five years to develop Brazil's sub-salt off-shore oil reserves and become one of the world's top producers.

"We have an enormous potential in the oil and gas field, an enormous challenge, and we are open for business for the British industry in oil equipment and services," Foster told them.

Cameron visited the industrial state Sao Paulo on Thursday to open a new $100 million factory by Britain's JCB to make backhoes and excavating equipment.

"If you can't beat them, join them," he said in a speech to businessmen, urging a greater British partnership with Brazil.

Tigers' Cabrera chasing Triple Crown

By NOAH TRISTER

AP Baseball Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:01 p.m. ET Sept. 27, 2012

DETROIT (AP) - Miguel Cabrera's drive sailed high into the Detroit night - so high, in fact, that left fielder Alex Gordon had time to drift over to the fence and wait a couple seconds before reaching over and robbing the slugger of a home run.

That snapshot was a good example of why nobody has won baseball's Triple Crown in 45 years. It takes a special blend of power, discipline, consistency - and yes, luck, if you believe in such a thing. But Cabrera is making perhaps the strongest bid since Carl Yastrzemski accomplished the feat in 1967.

With six games remaining, Detroit's 29-year-old third baseman tops the American League in batting average and RBIs and trails home run leader Josh Hamilton by only one.

"I heard a lot from the fans about the Triple Crown. I can't repeat most of it, but I'm sure you can guess," said Gordon, the Kansas City outfielder who did his part to slow Cabrera's pursuit by taking that homer away Wednesday night. "Miguel puts up these numbers every year, so it isn't a surprise that he's got a chance at the Triple Crown. I think that, some year, he'll probably do it. He's just an incredible hitter, and he's respected by everyone in the game."

Cabrera won his first batting title last year, hitting .344 to complete a "career triple crown" after winning home run and RBI titles in previous seasons. Now he's trying to become the first player since Yastrzemski to sweep all three categories at the same time. Since 1967, the Triple Crown has been even more elusive in baseball than in horse racing.

Yastrzemski figures it's only a matter of time before somebody new joins the club. Since his Triple Crown season, other seemingly unapproachable marks have been surpassed.

"When Rose broke Cobb's hit record, I never thought that would happen," Yastrzemski said. "When Ripken broke Gehrig's consecutive game record, I never thought that would happen either. So it's going to happen."

In 1967, Yastrzemski hit .326 with 44 homers and 121 RBIs - a feat somewhat overshadowed at the time by a memorable pennant race in which his Boston Red Sox outlasted Detroit and Minnesota by a single game. Cabrera is in a similar spot. The Tigers are in a tense race with the Chicago White Sox atop the AL Central.

After Thursday's 5-4 victory over Kansas City, Cabrera is hitting .326 with 42 homers and 133 RBIs.

"I want to keep my game the same way," Cabrera said recently. "I don't want to put extra pressure because we've got a lot of pressure right now in our division. I think it's going to be a big mistake if I put extra pressure on myself."

Ted Williams and Rogers Hornsby both won the Triple Crown twice. Frank Robinson did it the year before Yastrzemski, making the drought that followed even more striking.

According to STATS LLC., since Yastrzemski's Triple Crown, a player has finished atop his league in two of the three categories 45 times. That makes some sense, since a good power hitter can rack up homers and RBIs simultaneously.

Sure enough, in 41 of those 45 Triple Crown near-misses, batting average was the spoiler. Stars like Johnny Bench, Mike Schmidt, Barry Bonds and Alex Rodriguez have all led their leagues in homers and RBIs in the same season - only to fall short of the batting title.

That's what's made Cabrera unique. Some power hitters strike out so much they can forget about a decent batting average. Cabrera is on pace to hit at least .320 for the seventh time in eight years - but there may be a limit to how high his average can rise since he doesn't have much speed. That makes his Triple Crown attempt that much more remarkable.

"It's really a difficult thing to do, particularly for a guy like Cabrera," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "Cabrera doesn't get any infield hits, so that's a tough thing to do."

Jeff Bagwell was the only recent player to finish in the top two in each Triple Crown category; in the strike-shortened 1994 season, he was first in RBIs and second in both average and homers. In 1992, Gary Sheffield led the National League in hitting but finished two behind in the home run race and nine back in RBIs.

"That's the ultimate, to win the Triple Crown," slugger Jim Thome said. "I think it would be good for baseball. I think it would be good for kids of our era to say that they watched a Triple Crown. If you're a kid in Detroit, how could you not want to see a Triple Crown?"

Cabrera's chase has helped start a divisive debate over whether he or Angels rookie Mike Trout should be the American League MVP. Trout has been an all-around force for Los Angeles - at the plate, in the field and on the bases.

No matter who comes out on top in that vote, there's no detracting from Cabrera's terrific year. He was arrested at the start of spring training in 2011 and later pleaded no contest to drunken driving, but he earned praise from the organization for his work off the field in the aftermath of that ugly incident. He went on to win the batting title last year and helped the Tigers to a division championship.

When Detroit signed Prince Fielder in the offseason, Cabrera moved from first base to third and showed up at spring training looking a little slimmer. His home run and RBI totals in 2012 are both career highs, and while he doesn't remind anyone of Brooks Robinson with the glove, he's hardly the only Tiger with defensive issues.

He's also Detroit's nominee this year for the Roberto Clemente Award, which rewards the player "who best represents the game of baseball through positive contributions on and off the field, including sportsmanship and community involvement."

In July, Cabrera became the second Venezuela-born player to reach 300 homers.

"He's the total package," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "There's just none of them around that can do what he can do - hit for an extremely high average, hit for an extreme amount of power and be a run producer."

Cabrera has taken advantage of a big year from Detroit leadoff hitter Austin Jackson, who is hitting .303. Having a player like that ahead of him in the lineup has surely helped Cabrera's RBI total.

Any number of hitters could still play spoiler to Cabrera's Triple Crown chase. Joe Mauer is three points behind in average. Hamilton is ahead in homers, and Edwin Encarnacion is even with Cabrera at 42. Adam Dunn has 41.

So the stage is set for quite a conclusion to the regular season, both because of the AL Central race and Cabrera's own shot at history.

"It's hard. A lot of attention right now. Here, even in Venezuela," Cabrera said. "Try to stay out, don't read the papers. Try not to think about it."

People without kids waste their free time

? In this article from 2009, a duh makes the claim that those of us without children are inefficient and don't value our free time.
Quote

If you don't have kids, you don't have a time problem.

I have friends without kids and I want to wring their neck every time they say, "I'm so busy. I don't have enough time." You don't have enough time?! Are you kidding me? My theory, which seems to be much more popular with my friends that have children, is that people without kids are inefficient and don't fully value their free time.

Quote

Common sense says that if you have children, you will not be as productive. There's no way you will be able to get as much done. That book you want to write? It will take a lot longer. Time for exercise? Limited. People without kids have so much more free time that it's almost unfathomable.

So if common sense is accurate, why aren't people without kids so much more successful and productive? Fortunately, they waste their time and are inefficient. Too harsh? I'm speaking from personal experience.

The comments all appear to be from childfree people, so of course he gets what he deserves.

I, for one, enjoy my downtime and doubt I could be busy doing productive things all the time without suffering a breakdown. Relaxation time is something I've built into my life. I somehow also find the time for taking evening classes and other forms of self-improvement. Still, there isn't enough time - not because I "waste" it, but because there are so many things that I want to do, and even if I could go without sleep I wouldn't have time to do it all.

I don't need advice on how to live my life from Mr. Breeder:

Quote

Don't think you waste your time? Track it for a day or a week. If you really want to get depressed, have a friend with a child track his time and compare the results.

If you don't have kids you have all the time in the world. Go forth and use it. Let me know what you do with it. In the meantime, I'll be at Disneyland...

We are more productive and successful. He is probably too busy leaving work early for soccer and ballet to notice.

So, Mr. Dad wants me to track my time and compare it to his in some pissing contest over what constitutes "busy" and "time efficiency"? Could I get him a huge bucket of Don't Give A Fuck? I am not getting paid by him, so what I do with my time is none of his damn business. if I want to sit around watching a Deadly Women marathon on ID all day, I don't care if he thinks I am "using my time inefficiently". In fact, chances are his CF friends all claim that they are busy because they would rather sear their retinas with a wood burning tool than spend any time around a smug, judgmental ass fuck.

The major failure of this idea is that the concepts of what activities constitute a "Waste of Time" versus "A Productive Use of Time" versus "An It Had to be Done at Some Point Use of Time" versus "A Valuable Use of Time" are entirely subjective and will be completely different from person to person.

In addition the concepts of what results constitute a "Valuable/Worthwhile Product" of "Efficiently and Productively/Valuably Used Time" are going to be completely different depending on person and situation.

wait, so he'll be at disneyland..... now THAT'S a productive use of time....

In the mean time, I'll be roofing my house. He can shove it.

Re: People without kids waste their free time

Most of his activities are things involved with raising his kids. How is that productive? Maybe productive for his kid's lives, but destructive for the rest of the world because of his unneeded resource suckers.

What he's trying to do is attach "meaning" to his free time. He does this and this and this while away from his kids because he thinks he has to make the most of his time when he's not being interupted by his kids. Then he has time to go to Disney World with his kids. CF people can do this and this and this whenever they want and still go to Disney World and have a good time without worrying about what the screaming brats want.

Since he has kids, pretty much everything he does from now on can be considered "destructive" and not "productive." He's productive in about the same sense as purposely spilling a glass of water on your floor just so you can spend time moping it.

Fuck you gently with a chainsaw Mr Breeder.

I have to type quickly here because I'm headed into work. Oh, and as an aside? Yeah, I'm free to pick up extra shifts for my coworkers because I'm CF. My coworker is taking care of her sick mother so I'm covering for her. Last night I covered for a coworker who was herself sick. So is working at my job and being available to help others a waste of time?

People spend their time working, training for marathons, crafting, volunteering, and jerking off. That is their own fucking business and not yours. You chose to breed and thus created an enterprise that requires time. Believe me, I look at lazy moos pushing their strollers around town and sipping lattes as having all the free time in the world since they're not working or doing anything for anyone else.

I do NOT have free time, I simply have time not spent raising loaves. And what the fuck do you do that's so valuable? Give your kids time outs and abuse their sports coaches?

And as much as we love to get excited over CFC celebrities and achievers, most people have kids. Great athletes, heads of state, teachers, artists, community volunteers, business leaders, and musicians all have kids and manage to contribute to the world. You just use your loaves as an excuse for being a loser.

"If you don't have kids, you don't have a time problem."

Unless, for example, some LOSER WITH BRATS IS SLOWING DOWN THE GROCIERY LINE.

He's a DUH all right. DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

" In the meantime, I'll be at Disneyland"

Yer welcome to it! ENJOY THE SCREAMING.

I second this. How many times do we have to tell that these are CHOICES? It was his choice to have kids and he should have realized that it requires time. Now that he probably doesn't have it, he starts attacking the CF. Well, typical attitude of a jealous breeder.

And if we don't have kids that doesn't mean we have all the free time in the world. I do have to hold a part-time job, to work on my new degree, i take other courses than my university ones, i am taking my car driver's licence, i put some time into sports also, i do volunteering, not to mention the domestic chores and errands.

That he chose to fill up his time with kids is his business and he should STFU.

I can choose what to do with my free time and I most certainly value it. I treasure any kind of freedom more than anything. I may do something productive, or not. I have the whole day today, let's seee.....Who cares? Duh is OCD or some shit.

His whole message oozes envy and resentment.

And I'm quite certain he didn't spend time worrying about "wasting" his free time until he had kids. Then he realized he didn't get any, and is wistfully thinking back to when he had time to sleep in (or just SLEEP, period), work out, have sex, do creative projects...all gone now. So he patched things up by deciding that "productivity" is important for free time.

No one cares what he thinks. No one cares what he does. No one cares about the disgusting mediocrities he is raising. Roll-Eyes

Child rearing is busy-making work.

People do it to climb social ladders, gain status, feel important, and have people under their thumb for a couple of decades. People to extract love and attention from, often by guilt making and mental manipulation. And probably people to wipe old, wrinkly asses out of obligation and mind-fuckery.

This piece of shit, perfectly inconsequential, duhd wants to be relevant in this world. Instead of doing it with real achievement, he wipes noses and carries stale fries around.

Don't use us to feel relevant and important. You are neither.

Ugh. My friend told me last night that she can't stay out late for a friend's birthday party - on a Saturday night - because she has SO MUCH GOING ON! She is a SAHM with one kyd in preschool, a maid, grocery delivery, and a filthy-rich husband. You know what she has GOING ON? Getting her precious little Bratleigh into the "right" Manhattan kindergarten. That's it. She still has time for a run AND a yoga class every day, plus hanging out with her other rich SAHMs for play dates that include a bottle of wine each.

For the record, no matter what she says, this woman will get totally shitfaced and will be surreptitiously snorting controlled substances in the bathroom before the meal is over. It's almost too cliched for words.

Oh please! Who is more inefficient with their time than SAHMoos? They have all the damn time in the world, and yet they can't do anything worthwhile.I waste my free time? Fuck you. I go to school for 15 hours every week. I go to work for 20-30 hours per week. I have time aside for homework, time for housework, and time to get places. I use my time riding the bus for homework and checking up on things. Not a minute of my time is wasted but by other people.

I am (not) sorry (at all) but if I want to spend time gazing at the horizon longingly and I consider it a valuable use of my time, who is this man to say it is not so?
After I have worked, and done my house chore, what I like to do is my business, duh.

I gave away my last fuck a while ago. Nobody cares what you think, Duh. You obviously regret your life choices and now you attack anyone that was smart enough not to make the same mistake you did. Too bad, so sad. There was only five comments on that POS but all of them tear the "writer" a new asshole.Sounds like a typical breeder - "My time is far more important because I have kiiiiiiiids!"

On the contrary, CFers do value their free time, which is probably one of the reasons most of us are CF to begin with. We like being able to do what we like in our free time without having to make arrangements for child care or have what we do revolve around kids in some way.

Even then, who cares what anyone does in their spare time? Unless is pisses me off or causes me or someone else harm in some way, I don't care if someone is spending their free time trying to cure AIDS, hack into government files or sitting in front of the TV watching game shows and jerking off. Just because someone has a few brats doesn't mean their free time is more valuable - many parents are lazy slobs who don't work (or if they do, they're fucking lazy at work too but expect the same pay as the people who actually WORK). Not to mention this is a guy - a vast majority of fathers don't do shit in terms of raising their own kids. What's this asshole doing that's so important?

He cares so damn much about what unchilded people are doing because he wishes he could do it too. It's not a lack of free time - it's just he can't go back to college or build something or paint something without interruption from the kids he CHOSE to have. In short, jealousy and regret.

A Look Inside Diddy's Plush, Blinged-Out NYC Apartment - Celebrity ...

Friday, September 28, 2012, by Amy Schellenbaum

Sean "Diddy" Combs' 2,300-square-foot high-rise apartment in Manhattan hit the market for $8.5M last week, and finally some sweet new listing photos have surfaced. The apartment, a large one-bedroom carved from a three-bedroom unit, boasts some pretty fabulous views of Central Park and slick, at times sparkly, decor by celebrity designer Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz, not to mention a kind of cool transparent piano, more than one black velvet sofa, and a colossal bottle of Champagne. Whatever one's personal feelings about Lucite may be, Diddy's pad is yet another pristine enclave in one of America's dingiest cities. And hey, is it really a home of a hip-hop powerhouse if it doesn't include some over-the-top details? Have a gander above and check out the floorplan over on Curbed NY.

Things to take in to consideration when picking Cheap jodhpurs

If you are riding or working with horses regularly, for example every day or every week, there is a chance that you will consider buying Cheap jodhpurs so that you can easily replace them if they get ruined or are no longer wearable through general wear and tear.

Some of the best deals can be found online however there are some considerations to take in to account before making your purchase, to ensure that you get the right product at the right price. To begin with it's important to remember that low cost does not necessarily mean value for money. Opting for the cheapest pair you come across may result in you needing to buy another pair again more quickly, which will actually result in you spending more money that if you had opted for something slightly more expensive to begin with.

Whilst it's hard to determine exactly the quality of the product when sold online it is possible to get a good idea of this by doing a bit of research. Look for forums online where the quality of particular brands or retailers may be discussed or otherwise run a search online to see if you can find reviews for a particular product. Also have a look at the returns policy on an item; if it comes with terms that you may exchange it if it's faulty or badly made then this provides extra reassurance.

Try to use a retailer you feel you can trust; as well as researching the products you may wish to explore opinions on the retailer itself. If possible, look for discounted jodhpurs of high-quality suppliers and brands as you will get more for you money and guaranteed quality.

New VSS Forecast Sees Radio Gaining 2% In Ad Spending For ...

vsslogo.JPG

2012-2016 Forecast

Spending within the U.S. Communications Industry will increase 5.2% in 2012 to reach $1.189 trillion as consumers and businesses increasingly embrace digital technology and return to spending levels not seen since before the recent worldwide economic downturn, according to the 2012 Forecast released today by VERONIS SUHLER STEVENSON.

The 26th edition of the VSS Communications Industry Forecast 2012-16 found that the U.S. Communications Industry spending grew 4.4% in 2011 to $1.129 trillion despite a sluggish economy in which nominal Gross Domestic Product expanded 3.9%. Spending rose at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.7% in the 2006-2011 forecast period, surpassing GDP by a 0.3%. VSS expects the Communications Industry to grow at a 5.2% CAGR to $1.455 trillion by 2016, almost two times the growth rate during the past five years. At that pace, the Communications Industry will remain the fifth-largest industry among 15 economic sectors in 2016.

Traditional Consumer Advertising spending will post a 2.0% gain in 2012 to $146.57 billion. Even-year political and Olympics spending on Broadcast Television and accelerated growth in Broadcast and Satellite Radio and Out-of-Home Media will drive the gain. Broadcast TV, Broadcast and Satellite Radio, and Out-of-Home Media will also drive a 2.1% CAGR in the forecast period.

"Digital's influence is now a constant and significant factor in every sector, segment and sub-segment of the U.S. Communications industry," said VSS Co-Founder/Pres. JOHN SUHLER. "At the same time as digital technology and innovation continue to spur growth in the industry or propel the communications industry forward, emerging digital media and services are significantly changing consumption habits among both institutional and consumer end-users. These developments will drive digital-related expenditures to constitute nearly 40% of the overall U.S. Communications Industry spending by 2016."

Ask Stanford Med: Answers to your questions on prostate cancer ...

In recognition of?Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Eila Skinner, MD, chair of the urology department at Stanford, took questions via the @SUMedicine Twitter feed and Scope on prostate cancer and the research advancements in the screening, diagnosis and treatment of the disease. Below she responds to a selection of the submissions, which ranged from the controversy over the PSA test to the ways the field of genetics is changing prostate-cancer research.

@Prach82 and @gaisison ask: Why is the PSA test not considered to be reliable? Is the PSA test still advisable as a basic screening tool for prostate cancer? Are there updates on the recommendations?

PSA (prostate specific antigen) is a protein that was originally discovered at Stanford and can be detected in the blood. Men with prostate cancer tend to have higher levels of this protein. There is no question that prostate cancer can be detected earlier using this test combined with a prostate examination compared with an exam alone. It is estimated that the cancer can be detected on an average of 5 to 10 years earlier. It is also clear that cancers detected with PSA screening are more likely to be caught before they spread and at a stage when they are more likely to be cured with current treatments. So why the controversy?

First, men with other common prostate problems, like non-cancerous prostate enlargement (called BPH) can have an elevated PSA. Because of this only about 20-30 percent of men with elevated PSA on screening actually have cancer. They often have to undergo invasive testing like prostate biopsy in order to know that there is no cancer there. These tests are expensive and can sometimes cause side effects like infection. We are always searching for a more accurate test to use for screening, and a number of potential alternatives are being developed. Some are already available, like the urine PCA3 test. This test is still very expensive and has not yet gained widespread use as a screening tool.

Secondly, prostate cancer is usually very slow growing. It might take 10 to 30 years for an early cancer to become one that is life threatening. The risk of cancer goes up with age, so many of the men diagnosed with cancer using PSA testing at age 70 or 80 are never going to live long enough for their cancer to cause problems. Many patients are undergoing treatment today, such as surgery or radiation therapy, for cancers that are not destined to threaten their life.

Finally, we still don?t have proof that if every man got tested, even at age 50 or 60, they would end up living longer than ones who didn?t get tested. Current studies trying to test this have been difficult to complete. They suggest that there may be some benefit, but 40 or more men may have to be treated to save one life. Because the treatment can cause significant side effects, it isn?t clear if this is worth it from a public health perspective.

Still, we shouldn?t give up on the PSA test. We need to be smarter about using the test and learning how to predict how a cancer is going to behave in an individual patient. In other words, use the test to find the cancer, but don?t treat everyone?s cancer the same way. Many cancers can be safely watched, thus avoiding the side effects of treatment. On the other hand, the patient with an aggressive cancer that is picked up earlier might be saved with treatment.

At this point,?I?d recommend that you discuss the pros and cons of testing with your doctor.

GS asks: Previous research has found that men who eat one and a half servings of pan-fried red meat weekly have a 30 percent higher risk of being diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. How does eating certain foods increase or decrease you prostate cancer risk?

There have been a number of dietary studies (subscription required) demonstrating a relationship between the intake of red meat and the risk of prostate cancer. Most studies have shown that processed meats, such as hamburger and grilled meats, have the highest risk. These meats seem to particularly increase the risk of more aggressive cancers. Cooking meat to high temperatures on a grill or barbecue, especially when charring occurs, may increase the production of heterocyclic amines and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, both of which are known carcinogens. White meats, such as chicken, and fish can generate these compounds as well. But they tend to be cooked more quickly, have less charring and generally haven?t?been associated with an increase risk of prostate cancer. Marinating meat before cooking can decrease these compounds. To decrease risk of prostate cancer, eating red meat that is rare or cooked at lower temperatures or eating less red meat and opting for white meats, such as chicken, or fish may be safest.

There are still many questions about diet and prostate cancer prevention and treatment, though a few large studies have been completed. Sometimes we have seen opposite effects than we expected. For example, earlier studies suggested high selenium intake might prevent prostate cancer. But the SELECT study of over 30,000 men showed that men who took supplemental selenium did not have less prostate cancer but actually developed more diabetes! Other studies have suggested benefits of some dietary intake such as soy protein and pomegranate juice, but these have not been confirmed by larger studies.

The best advice for men is to follow a heart-healthy diet. Heart disease is still by far the greatest threat to men?s health, and evidence suggests that a heart-healthy diet, which is high in vegetables and fruits and whole grains, low in saturated fats and red meat, is also the best diet for prostate cancer prevention.

Ella asks: Findings published this month show that ?stop-and-start? hormone-deprivation therapy for localized prostate cancer doesn?t shorten overall survival compared to continuous treatment.? What are your thoughts on this type of intermittent therapy approach??

Hormone therapy works by stopping the production of testosterone and other androgens (male hormones) or by blocking their ability to act on the cancer cells. It has been known for over 50 years that removing testosterone will cause the cancer to go into remission, though most advanced cancers will eventually become resistant to this treatment?(called castrate-resistant prostate cancer). This approach is still the mainstay of treatment for men with prostate cancer that has spread outside the prostate. Hormone therapy like this can cause significant side effects including hot flashes, sexual dysfunction and osteoporosis, among others.

It was theorized that hormone blockade could be utilized on an intermittent basis, which might decrease the side effects of treatment or even delay the development of castrate-resistant disease. For these protocols, the hormone therapy is stopped after 9-12 months, when the cancer has usually had the maximum expected response, and testosterone levels are allowed to return to normal. The disease is monitored using serum PSA and the therapy is restarted once the PSA rises to a predetermined level. Such an on-off cycle can be repeated many times if necessary.

There have now been several?(.pdf) randomized trials?comparing this approach to one using continuous hormone therapy in patients with metastatic disease, and several others that are still underway. While the findings?(.pdf)?have been mixed, it appears that intermittent therapy does improve quality of life and is less expensive compared to continuous therapy. While the time to castrate-resistant disease does not appear to be prolonged, it has been basically equivalent to continuous therapy, suggesting that it is safe to use hormone therapy this way. Further analysis of these studies might help us decide which patients gain the most benefit from intermittent therapy, allowing us to individualize our treatments in the future.

JBL asks: How has new research on genes linked to prostate cancer helped scientists better understand how the disease develops??

I asked my colleague Jim Brooks, MD, an expert in genetic predictors of prostate cancer risk and progression, to answer this question. He responds:

Genetic research into the causes of prostate cancer has taken two forms. The first is the investigation of the genes we inherit from our parents that increase our risk of getting prostate cancer. The second is research into the genetic changes that turn normal prostate cells into cancerous cells. In the first, researchers have found several locations in the genome that increase a man?s risk of getting prostate cancer, but surprisingly, they only do so a very small amount. This contrasts sharply with breast cancer in which hereditary gene mutations (in BRCA1 and BRCA2) virtually guarantee that a woman will get breast cancer at some point in her life.

Furthermore, the parts of the DNA that are associated with prostate cancer risk are not found to lie within genes. This surprising finding has begun to make more sense in light of the ENCODE project, which shows that these regions of DNA are important in regulating genes. Of the few spots that lie within genes, these provide hints that inflammation in the prostate might be important in causing prostate cancer.

We have learned more about the genetic changes that distinguish prostate cancers from normal prostate tissues that presumably cause prostate cancer. For example, it appears that each individual patient?s prostate cancer is unique ? i.e. has a set of mutations that make it different from another patient?s. This makes it unlikely that a single therapy will work for all prostate cancers. However, there are several common themes found in the majority of prostate cancers including particular mutations and cell regulating pathways that are activated in prostate cancer. For example, the androgen signaling pathway, which is driven by the male hormone testosterone, is active in nearly all prostate cancers.

Recently, new therapies targeting that pathway have been developed that work for men in whom traditional androgen blocking strategies have failed. We and others are working hard to identify other pathways that are turned on in more aggressive forms of prostate cancer, both for identifying men who need more aggressive therapies and for devising new treatment strategies for treatment. Large efforts are now underway to sequence the DNA in many prostate cancers. In other types of cancer, this has allowed clinicians to choose specific treatments, especially ones they might not have thought of, that are tailored to the genetic changes in an individual?s cancer. This will almost certainly be the case for prostate cancer in the near future.

Peggy P.?asks: My husband was successfully treated for stage II prostate cancer. I?ve?read?that aspirin may aid in prostate cancer recovery. What are your thoughts on research showing that aspirin may play a beneficial role in the treatment, or potentially the prevention, of prostate cancer?

There have been a number of studies suggesting that long-term regular use of aspirin may decrease the risk of developing prostate cancer. The?Health Professionals Follow-up Study?found that men who took aspirin regularly experienced a 10-15 percent decrease risk of prostate cancer. The benefit was most in men who took aspirin daily over 5 years or more, and the effect seemed to be greatest in reducing the most aggressive types of cancer. However, starting aspirin after diagnosis did not seem to change the course of the disease. Similar results have been demonstrated in other studies.

Once again, the greatest risk to health for men is heart disease, and there is very strong evidence that daily aspirin can have a positive effect on cardiovascular health. The possible preventive effect on the risk of prostate cancer is a bonus.

Greg asks: I am a 55 year old male recently diagnosed with prostate cancer? My urologist recommends either DaVinci prostatectomy or brachytherapy. Which treatment option carries the lowest risk of side effects?

There are currently a number of different treatment options for localized prostate cancer, including the two mentioned above plus open surgery, external radiation, cryosurgery and others. There are many factors that need to be considered when recommending a specific therapy. These include the aggressiveness and extent of the cancer and the patient?s symptoms, age, general health and preferences. There are also physician factors including the doctor?s experience with the treatment and the equipment available to him or her.

The best way to answer the question of which treatment is best would be to run a large randomized trial including several thousand men where the type of treatment was determined by a flip of a coin. These studies have been unpopular and extremely difficult to complete, so we don?t have this type of information available today. The best we have been able to do is to follow patients treated with the different types of therapy, trying to match the patients as best we can and see which is best from the standpoint of cancer cure and side effects.

From these studies it appears that the effectiveness of surgery and radiation for the average patient is similar, in other words both have a similar cure rate in the long term. Every type of treatment for prostate cancer has potential side effects, especially on urinary symptoms and sexual function. The types of side effects and their timing vary between these treatment options. For example, men who undergo a surgical prostatectomy tend to have some incontinence and impotence that are worse right after surgery and often improve over time. There are also some relatively rare complications from the operation itself. Men with brachytherapy (also called ?seed implants?) have less incontinence but tend to have significant bladder irritation at the beginning causing urinary frequency and urgency, which also improves over time. Impotence with radiation tends to occur later, perhaps a year or more after treatment. Rectal problems are more common with radiation treatments than with surgery. As you can imagine, it is difficult to say one of these treatments is ?best?.

I would recommend that you have a frank discussion with your doctor about the expected cure rate with each of these treatments in your particular situation, as well as the risks of the side effects mentioned above. I would highly recommend that you get a second opinion, and consult with both a surgeon and a radiation therapist before making a final decision.

BofA Appoints Small Business Bankers - Zacks.com

As part of its previously announced plan to appoint more than 1,000 small business bankers across the country, Bank of America Corporation (BAC - Analyst Report) reported the recruitment of 138 such bankers in Florida. Of these, 58 bankers were hired in South Florida, 34 in Central Florida, 28 in Gulf Coast and the remaining in North Florida.

BofA?s decision to hire small business bankers throughout the country stems from the fact that small businesses were facing difficulties in obtaining the expertise required for running operations and maintaining finances. Hence, in 2010, the company announced its plan to employ a wide number of such bankers.

Often, small business owners face unique and complex financial demands. To understand the exclusive needs of these small business owners, customized guidance and constant attention of small business bankers are extremely essential. Therefore, BofA is hiring these specialized bankers to tap the huge demand for personalized help in the state.

Through BofA?s small business bankers, small business owners will be able to access local expertise and a dedicated resource that can properly interpret its exclusive needs. Small business bankers will evaluate the business owners? credit, deposits, payroll and cash management needs besides providing guidance. This, in turn, will enable these businesses to better manage its finances and work more efficiently.

According to BofA, small businesses are critical to the overall development of the economy. In spite of their significant contribution to the economy, these do not have access to better banking facilities. Therefore, the company took such an initiative to sort out the problems faced by small businesses and provide assistance to owners in order to ensure smooth facilitation of their business operations.

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), in Florida, there are approximately 2 million small businesses. These businesses account for more than 98% of all employers and employ over 40% of the private-sector workforce. Moreover, almost 75% of the state?s gross domestic product (GDP) comes from these small businesses.

In these efforts, BofA has been constantly pursuing active lending to small-scale firms. In the first half of 2012, the company extended approximately $813.8 million (including $361 million in new originations) in credit to small businesses across Florida.

Much like BofA, JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM - Analyst Report) is also trying to accelerate the economic recovery by lending to small businesses. In the first six months of 2012, it provided credit of nearly $10 billion to small businesses and offered loan and raised capital of more than $460 billion for its commercial and consumer clients.

Though BofA is hiring small business bankers, recently The Wall Street Journal reported that the company is planning to layoff nearly 16,000 employees by the end of this year in order to boost its top-line growth. The job cuts are part of its ?Project New BAC?? the efficiency improvement initiative launched to rationalize its operations and shed non-core assets.

Currently, BofA retains a Zacks #3 Rank, which translates into a short-term Hold rating. Considering the fundamentals, we also maintain our long-term ?Neutral? recommendation on the stock.

News and Society Blog-Environmental Info: Property Rights?

What is the meaning of This thorny concept was at one time largely taken for granted, as municipalities absorbed landowners real property into projects that were described as for the public good. These projects could include, for example, eminent domain seizure to construct a public parking lot.

We now see municipalities with wildly different philosophies on eminent domain.

For example, some municipalities in Upstate New York have chosen to pass industry-friendly pro-fracking statements that imply the entirety of their population are eager to have their communities changed into ubiquitous out-door factories for the sake of hydro-fracking for natural gas. Some real property owners within the municipalities have protested the secrecy used to pass these statements; many of which are passed at the whim of the town board members and without public input.

Other municipalities that may reside next door to the pro-fracking town boards may pass bans and moratoriums while attempting to gather information on the fracking process that will relate to the effect on human beings and the environment in their communities. Some real property owners say this is an infringement on their right of use of and profiting off their property. The question of property rights and what exactly they include becomes a very important issue when deciding who can do what on their property. It should be noticed however that common sense should help to provide an answer once and for all, namely that to engage in behavior that has the potential of harming our natural environment should be reseached and studied completely before any action is taken.

People who own property and want to gain revenue thereof, should be able to do so, but all property has borders, and on the other side of that border is someone elses property, which could be effected by the changes and conditions produced by the property next to it.

A little discussed matter is whether the environment, in and of itself, has rights. The very mention of this perspective is sensitive. We have ideas that range from the environment as raw material for capitlistic profit to environment as sacred.

As a nation, we seem to have been unable to discuss this matter. Profit sounds great until you find a nuclear facility next door to your home. Without fail we hear that accidents can happen but they have been regulated for. This is a wildly interesting idea. The nature of accidents is that we don't know what they will be.

For example, the Assumption Parish, Louisiana sinkhole caught everyone by surprise, is ongoing, seriously dangerous, and not broadcast to the nation. The sinkhole accident is in the process of unfolding and as of now, nobody knows what it will do. I suspect this would be the time for the good legislators of Louisiana to start legislating.

We need a serious conversation about property rights. Instead, the topic is swept under the rug as corporations and government go about their business of profit and power.

The human beings, probably more closely related to environment than to corporations/government, need to think about their wishes.
