Oscar Ortega Struggled With Mental Illness, Family Says

New York Times:

IDAHO FALLS -- A referee lifted Oscar Ortega?s hand high into the clear Rocky Mountain night last summer. Mr. Ortega had not yet been accused of trying to kill the president. He had not yet told the world he was Jesus Christ. Not until the next morning would all the blows to his body make him urinate blood.

Inhabitat's Week in Green: LA Auto Show, tidal energy farm and Japan's futuristic eco-city

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us -- it's the Week in Green.

It was a big week for green cars, as Inhabitat scoured the floors of the LA Auto Show to search for the latest and greatest in green auto design and innovation. We were excited to check out Audi's hybrid-diesel E-Tron Spyder concept car, Croatia's first electric vehicle prototype the DOK-ING XD, and Honda's hotly anticipated 2013 electric version of their popular Fit. Honda also made waves at the west coast auto show with their Civic Natural Gas car, which took home the title of 'Green Car of the Year' -- the Civic is the cleanest running internal combustion car certified by the EPS. Meanwhile, Ford announced that their EVOS plug-in hybrid will be hitting the market next year, FlyKly's ultra-modern electric bikes have become a choice ride in New York City, a German museum decided to recreate an operable version the world's oldest electric car, and the US Navy successfully sent a test-ship out on a 117 hour voyage using a 50 percent algae-derived fuel.

There were also some exciting announcements in clean energy technology this week, including a recent report completed by leading scientists that predict giant orbiting solar power plants could supply all the earth's energy needs by 2041. We also learned that France will open the world's largest tidal energy farm in 2012, and GE will provide the turbines for a $100 million wind farm in Mongolia. Also for Mongolia, a local geo-engineering firm is making plans to battle the capital's scorching hot summers by cooling it down with gigantic manmade chunks of ice that mimic naleds. London's audacious mayor came up with an equally ambitious idea -- his plan is to curb pollution by spraying the city's roads with a sticky calcium-based adhesive able to catch airborne pollutants. We also got the inside scoop from Panasonic's Energy Solution Business Director, Haruyuki Ishio, on the futuristic eco-city that is being planned for Fujisawa, Japan.

USC holds off No. 4 Oregon 38-35 (AP)

EUGENE, Ore. ? Matt Barkley threw for 323 yards and four touchdowns and No. 18 USC held off No. 4 Oregon 38-35 on Saturday night when Alejandro Maldonado missed a 37-yard field goal to tie the game with five seconds left.

Trailing 24-7 in the third quarter, Oregon mounted a furious comeback and narrowed it to 38-35 with 7:05 left in the fourth quarter. Barkley led his team to the Oregon 15, but Marc Tyler fumbled and the ball was recovered by the Ducks with 2:54 to go.

Oregon marched down the field but Maldondado's kick, which was brought five yards closer because of a USC penalty, went wide left.

The loss snaps a 21-game winning streak for the Ducks (9-2, 7-1 Pac-12) at Autzen Stadium, which was the longest in the nation. It also stopped Oregon's winning streak in conference games at 19.

Robert Woods, who was held out of some practices this week with ankle and shoulder injuries, caught seven passes for 53 yards and two scores. With the victory, USC (9-2, 6-2) kept the Ducks from clinching a spot in the inaugural Pac-12 championship game.

The loss had greater implications for Oregon after No. 2 Oklahoma State lost to Iowa State 37-31on Friday night, which is sure to shake up the BCS standings. The Ducks had jumped to fourth in those rankings after a decisive 53-30 victory over then-No. 3 Stanford last week.

But against USC, they were playing catch up from the start.

The Trojans scored first on Barkley's 59-yard touchdown pass to Marqise Lee in the first quarter, then added Barkley's 12-yard scoring pass to Woods early in the second to go up 14-0.

The Ducks didn't' look like themselves until an efficient scoring drive midway through the second quarter. Darron Thomas hit true freshman Colt Lyerla with a 35-yard pass before striking fellow frosh De'Anthony Thomas with a 29-yarder for the touchdown. The seven-play drive covered 88 yards in just 2:15.

But USC answered with Barkley's 4-yard touchdown pass to Woods. The TD, Barkley's 73rd, moved him past Carson Palmer for second on Southern California's career touchdown list. Matt Leinart had 99 for the Trojans.

The Ducks had a chance to narrow it before the half, but De'Anthony Thomas was out of bounds when he pulled down a Darron Thomas pass to the end zone. On the next play, James fumbled and the ball was recovered by USC.

James, who dislocated his elbow earlier in the season and missed two games, was hit in the arm on the play, and was holding the elbow as he was helped up by trainers.

The Trojans opened the second half with Andre Heidari's 26-yard field goal to make it 24-7, but Oregon again showed a flash of its usual speedy offense with a quick drive capped by Kenjon Barner's 10-yard touchdown run.

The Ducks, known for their second half adjustments, couldn't slow USC's momentum and the Trojans scored on the subsequent series with Marc Tyler's 3-yard run. Barkley added a 5-yard scoring pass to Randall Telfer to make it 38-14.

De'Anthony Thomas narrowed it again for the Ducks with a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and the Autzen Stadium crowd got back into the game with 3:28 left in the third quarter.

Barner had an 8-yard touchdown run to close the Ducks to within 38-27 with 12:44 left in the game. The Trojans ate a lot of time up with their next series, but Barkley was intercepted by John Boyett, putting the Ducks in business on their own 40. Oregon scored on James' 1-yard run, and the 2-point conversion was ruled good after review to make it 38-35.

Darron Thomas threw for 265 yards and a touchdown for the Ducks. Barner ran for 123 yards and two scores.

But USC still got its first victory in the state of Oregon since 2005.

The Trojans cannot play in the postseason because of NCAA sanctions. The league's southern representative is still up for grabs between Arizona State, Utah and UCLA.

There were cheers before the game started when NBA stars LeBron James, Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Carmelo Anthony and several others showed up on the sidelines. James and Anthony even tossed around a football.

The players were have been working out at Nike headquarters in Beaverton, Ore., just outside of Portland.

Italy's Monti reviews finances before EU meetings (Reuters)

ROME (Reuters) ? Newly installed Prime Minister Mario Monti got straight to work at the weekend, reviewing Italy's parlous finances before a round of meetings in coming days with European leaders to discuss the growing euro zone debt crisis.

Monti easily won confidence votes in record time in both houses of parliament last week, just days after his predecessor Silvio Berlusconi lost his majority and quit -- the latest EU premier to fall victim to the Europe-wide economic emergency.

The new government of technocrats, supported by almost all Italy's main parties, will focus first on enacting austerity measures passed by Berlusconi that aim to balance the budget in 2013 and halt the rise in Italy's monumental debt pile.

But with the economy looking certain to slow, additional measures will be needed and Monti, who is also economy minister, spent his first hours in office reviewing the latest data.

Italian newspapers said on Sunday that new budget measures were likely to be unveiled within two weeks, with a property tax abolished by Berlusconi set to return, plus moves to tackle tax evasion and a cut in payroll taxes to lift employment.

As the broad outlines of his program emerge, Monti will travel to Brussels on Tuesday for talks with Herman Van Rompuy, president of the European Council, and Jose Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission.

On Thursday he will have lunch in Strasbourg with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Europe's two main powerbrokers showed growing exasperation with Berlusconi, believing he had failed to grasp the severity of the crisis, and there was obvious relief in Paris and Berlin over the arrival of Professor Monti, a former EU commissioner.

"Up until now Italy was part of the problem, now it is part of the solution," said Daniel Gros, the head of the Center for European Policy Studies in Brussels.

EUROBOND DIVISIONS

But Monti will find himself at odds with Merkel over ways out of Europe's financial crisis, which has roiled markets and raised fears for the future of the euro single currency.

While Germany has rejected calls for common euro zone debt issuance, Monti enthusiastically endorsed the measure before taking office, writing in the Financial Times in July that eurobonds "are the only answer to Europe's crisis."

He is only likely to make headway on this issue if he can show Europe that he has a firm grasp on Italy's finances and a clear vision of how to cut its debt, currently running at a perilous 120 percent of gross domestic product.

Although he secured huge support in last week's vote from a parliament spooked by a sudden jump in Italian borrowing costs, he could face a battle as he tries to win backing for greater austerity or implementing a pledge to liberalize the hidebound economy.

Berlusconi said on Sunday he expected Monti to stay in office until the end of the legislature in 2013. While he was ready to back a new property tax, Berlusconi warned that other measures, such as a mooted wealth tax, were not acceptable.

"The government is made up of highly competent technocrats. That does not mean they have carte blanche on everything. We will be very attentive on every single measure," he told Corriere della Sera newspaper.

"Monti cannot ignore us. (My party) is the biggest party in parliament and will be an irreplaceable point of reference for this government," he added.

Occupy's 'Day of Action': Winners and losers (The Week)

New York ? Across the country, embattled Occupiers make an obstreperous stand ? and run into police making a stand of their own

After a week of harsh police crackdowns and evictions from Occupy camps in cities across the U.S., the Occupy movement took to the streets Thursday for a "Day of Action." Police showed up, too, arresting about 300 demonstrators in New York City and hundreds more in sister protests nationwide. The day of marches, demonstrations, and occasional celebrity sightings marked Occupy Wall Street's two-month anniversary. Who ended the day looking better, and who ended up looking bad? Here, a brief rundown:

WINNERS

Wall Street
"It turns out that Occupy Wall Street is not too big to fail," says Jacob Laskin at?FrontPage. The lefty protesters' signature stunt failed "when police easily repelled them" from shutting down Wall Street or silencing the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange. Yes, the 1 percenters can rest easy, says Kirsten Boyd Johnson at?Wonkette. Their police force is now arresting people for "the crime of making it slightly more difficult for Wall Street employees to get to work."

Occupy Wall Street
Sure, the New York protesters weren't able to "occupy Wall Street in a literal sense," but the "Day of Action" was still a rousing success, says Eugene Robinson at?The Washington Post. Journalists and tourists came en masse to gawk at the standoff, and it's obvious that the movement's powerful central idea ? that the system is stacked in favor of the super-wealthy ? is gaining traction. For the first time in decades, we're having a national conversation about inequality. So whether or not they get back into Zuccotti Park, Occupiers have already "done something more important: They've gotten into people's heads."

Public art
As thousands of protesters crossed the Brooklyn Bridge Thursday night, someone projected "'99%' and a beautiful series of statements on the side of the Verizon building" in lower Manhattan, says Xeni Jardin at?BoingBoing. It was?"like the bat-signal."?Starting with the ubiquitous Occupy phrase "Mic check," the "stop-motion manifesto and poem" continued in short flashes of inspiring verse. "It is the most beautiful work of art, even viewed over a poor-quality web video stream."

LOSERS

Michael Bloomberg
Judging by the massive turnout Thursday, "Mayor Bloomberg's apparent plan to squash the Occupy Wall Street movement by evicting protesters from Zuccotti Park earlier this week only added fuel to the fire," says BoingBoing's Jardin. Indeed, "Bloomberg's bum rush" of Occupy's original home re-energized the tired movement, "gave them a common enemy," and renewed public sympathies, says David Weidner at?The Wall Street Journal. And "if Bloomberg's extreme action was good for OWS, it was not the best thing for the city," says Philip Gourevitch at?The New Yorker. A mayor who shuts down the press at will and unleashes the cops to "manhandle the citizenry" with impunity is bad for everyone.

Commuters
Plans to "occupy" New York City's subway system didn't result in any major delays, but several dozen protesters were arrested for blocking traffic across major bridges and roads in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Chicago, Portland, and Los Angeles ? during rush hour. It was infuriating to watch as this "bolshevik mob? shut down many streets and caused traffic nightmares for ordinary people trying to get to and from work," says Robert Stacy McCain at?The Other McCain. "I continue to be amazed at the restraint shown by the NYPD in not giving these hippie punks the kind of brutality they deserve."

Cops
It's hard to see how the "extraordinary trust, sympathy, and power" New Yorkers have given their police department since 9/11 will survive the "shocking and apparently gratuitous violence" the NYPD is using on nonviolent protesters, says The New Yorker's Gourevitch. Indeed, says Mike Riggs at?Reason. White Occupiers are "getting the crap kicked out of them by cops at Occupy protests across the country." That's causing a "much needed paradigm shift." These "skinny intellectuals" were probably "indifferent to fond" of the cops before. Now, they'll start seeing "police militarization and the unchecked power of the state" for the danger it really is.
