WeddingLovely Puts Thousands Of Wedding Vendor Listings Under One Roof


WeddingLovely, a small, but growing 500 Startups-backed wedding planning service, has now launched a comprehensive wedding vendor directory which combines over 2,300 wedding vendor listings under one roof, allowing couples to easily search, filter vendors by budget and location, plus read and write vendor reviews. The new vendor guide is the culmination of several years’ worth of efforts by the company, which had previously operated a series a specialized directories including WeddingInviteLove.com,  WeddingVenueLove.com and WeddingPhotoLove.com, for example, ahead of the launch its consumer-facing planning product last summer.


That product, for those unfamiliar, is designed to walk couples through the exhausting and stressful wedding planning process with a series of how-to’s and guides that can help you figure out all the tasks you’ll need to accomplish to properly plan a wedding. The guide includes helpful advice and tips, like “flower mistakes to avoid,” and “questions to ask caterers,” for instance, and then points couples to vendors who can help them with the various services. The site also offers its own wedding websites for couples with all the standard features like event details, registry links, an “About Us” section, and more.


Before WeddingLovely, the company had built out several wedding vendor directories in specialized verticals. Says founder Tracy Osborn, these specialized directories had initially given the company a lot of credibility with the various wedding industry vendors, but as the company grew, referring people to eight different directories had become “a little ridiculous.”


In the WeddingLovely planning product, the company would point couples to these vendors, but couldn’t actually support a full directory listing for a number of vendor categories, which was also a problem.


Stylish Papers


“We couldn’t cover people who do wedding rentals,” says Osborn, as an example. “If someone signed up for our photographer directory who does photo booth rentals, it didn’t quite fit,” she explains. “The new general directory pulls in the listings from our specialized directories so our vendors don’t have to do anything additional, but it also supports those vendor groups that haven’t been able to work with WeddingLovely up until now.”


This also includes other groups like dressmakers, honeymoon providers, wedding website makers, officiants, jewelry designers, favor designers, and more.


Going forward, all sorts of vendors can submit an application for inclusion in the WeddingLovely directory. If approved, they can choose a free basic account, or a $25/month pro account, which offers branding opportunities, more exposure in search results, and other opportunities for promotion on the company blog. WeddingLovely also charges couples $9.95/month for the service, or a one-time fee of $79, if they prefer.


The company has been profitable since July, and remains a bootstrapped team of three women. Osborn, a sole founder and self-taught coder, says the service saw thousands of signups following its launch last year, and the conversion funnel is holding at about 20% trial conversions, and then 75% of those becoming paying customers. Like all wedding companies, WeddingLovely must continually acquire users. Currently, it has a several hundred paying couples on board.


The majority of vendors added to the service today come from word-of-mouth referrals, often by other vendors. The company also relies on SEO and is considering using paid ads in early 2014.


Remaining small makes sense for this Mountain View-based startup for now. “I really love bootstrapping,” says Osborn.


“The wedding industry can be kind of crazy. I love being able to focus on my gut and where I want to go, rather than worrying so much about profit and making sure the company is exploding. I can make some good decisions,” she explains. “And I can take as much time as I want.”

Report: Warming likely to make bad things worse

WASHINGTON (AP) — Many of the ills of the modern world — starvation, poverty, flooding, heat waves, droughts, war and disease — are likely to worsen as the world warms from man-made climate change, a leaked draft of an international scientific report forecasts.

The report uses the word "exacerbate" repeatedly to describe warming's effect on poverty, lack of water, disease and even the causes of war.

The Nobel Peace Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change will issue a report next March on how global warming is already affecting the way people live and what will happen in the future, including a worldwide drop in income. A leaked copy of a draft of the summary of the report appeared online Friday on a climate skeptic's website. Governments will spend the next few months making comments about the draft.

"We've seen a lot of impacts and they've had consequences," Carnegie Institution climate scientist Chris Field, who heads the report, told The Associated Press on Saturday. "And we will see more in the future."

Cities, where most of the world now lives, have the highest vulnerability, as do the globe's poorest people.

"Throughout the 21st century, climate change impacts will slow down economic growth and poverty reduction, further erode food security and trigger new poverty traps, the latter particularly in urban areas and emerging hotspots of hunger," the report says. "Climate change will exacerbate poverty in low- and lower-middle income countries and create new poverty pockets in upper-middle to high-income countries with increasing inequality."

For people living in poverty, the report says, "climate-related hazards constitute an additional burden."

The report says scientists have high confidence especially in what it calls certain "key risks":

—People dying from warming- and sea rise-related flooding, especially in big cities.

—Famine because of temperature and rain changes, especially for poorer nations.

—Farmers going broke because of lack of water.

—Infrastructure failures because of extreme weather.

—Dangerous and deadly heat waves worsening.

—Certain land and marine ecosystems failing.

"Human interface with the climate system is occurring and climate change poses risks for human and natural systems," the 29-page summary says.

None of the harms talked about in the report is solely due to global warming nor is climate change even the No. 1 cause, the scientists say. But a warmer world, with bursts of heavy rain and prolonged drought, will worsen some of these existing effects, they say.

For example, in disease, the report says until about 2050 "climate change will impact human health mainly by exacerbating health problems that already exist" and then it will lead to worse health compared to a future with no further warming.

If emissions of carbon dioxide from the burning of coal, oil and gas continue at current trajectories, "the combination of high temperature and humidity in some areas for parts of the year will compromise normal human activities including growing food or working outdoors," the report says.

Scientists say the global economy may continue to grow, but once the global temperature hits about 3 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than now, it could lead to worldwide economic losses between 0.2 and 2.0 percent of income.

One of the more controversial sections of the report involves climate change and war.

"Climate change indirectly increases risks from violent conflict in the form of civil war, intergroup violence and violent protests by exacerbating well-established drivers of these conflicts such as poverty and economic shocks," the report says.

Pennsylvania State University climate scientist Michael Mann, who wasn't part of the international study team, told the AP that the report's summary confirms what researchers have known for a long time: "Climate change threatens our health, land, food and water security."

The summary went through each continent detailing risks and possible ways that countries can adapt to them.

For North America, the highest risks over the long term are from wildfires, heat waves and flooding. Water — too much and too little — and heat are the biggest risks for Europe, South America and Asia, with South America and Asia having to deal with drought-related food shortages. Africa gets those risks and more: starvation, pests and disease. Australia and New Zealand get the unique risk of losing their coral reef ecosystems, and small island nations have to be worried about being inundated by rising seas.

Field said experts paint a dramatic contrast of possible futures, but because countries can lessen some of the harms through reduced fossil fuel emissions and systems to cope with other changes, he said he doesn't find working on the report depressing.

"The reason I'm not depressed is because I see the difference between a world in which we don't do anything and a world in which we try hard to get our arms around the problem," he said.

Authors Tom Siegfried and Jeffrey Bennett honored




Washington, D.C., Oct. 30, 2013 The American Institute of Physics (AIP) has named a journalist and a children's book author as winners of the 2013 AIP Science Communications Awards for their works on the discovery of the Higgs boson and a dog's imaginary trip to the Moon.


Tom Siegfried will receive the prize in the science writing category for his essay "Nature's Secrets Foretold," published in Science News magazine. Jeffrey Bennett will receive the award in the writing for children category for his book Max Goes to the Moon.


The selection committees praised Siegfried's article for its skillful and engaging writing, which made a complex topic accessible to a general audience, and Bennett's book for its delightful blend of fact and fiction.


"Bennett's imaginative storytelling and Siegfried's elegant descriptions of complex concepts make these two pieces as engaging they are informative," said Catherine O'Riordan, AIP vice president for Physics Resources. "Their efforts provide readers with context for important discoveries and fundamental scientific concepts, and AIP is pleased to recognize their work."


Each winner will receive a $3,000 check, an inscribed Windsor chair, and a certificate of recognition from AIP. The awards will be presented at the American Astronomical Society (AAS) 2014 winter meeting in National Harbor, Md.


Celebrating Math's Power to Predict


For decades, physicists thought they knew why nature's basic particles possess mass. There had to be a field permeating all of space that impeded changes in a particle's motion, creating inertia, the hallmark of mass. Such a field, properly energized, would reveal itself by the appearance of a particle called the Higgs boson. Its discovery at the Large Hadron Collider was a landmark in physics history, but the implications went far beyond explaining the origin of mass.


In his essay "Nature's Secrets Foretold," published in Science News magazine, Siegfried seeks to provide a broader perspective for this recent discovery: first, that the Higgs field, by conferring mass on particles, made all the complexities of nature possible, from atoms and molecules to people and planets; and second, that the Higgs discovery was a validation of the idea that humans can use mathematical ingenuity to discern nature's deepest secrets. Formulations developed by Peter Higgs and other scientists foresaw the existence of something that, in order to be proven, required the construction of a multibillion-dollar machine.



Tom Siegfried is a freelance writer and editor who currently writes the Context blog at http://www.sciencenews.org. OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Chip Kelly walks by a sign commemorating Adrian Burk's record seven touchdown passes in a single game every day in the Philadelphia Eagles' offices.

Even knowing the importance of that mark, Kelly saw little reason to allow Nick Foles to try to break it.

Foles tied an NFL mark with seven touchdown passes and threw for 406 yards before being replaced in the fourth quarter in the Eagles' 49-20 victory over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday.

"I know what the record is," Kelly said. "But this isn't about records, it's about going out and getting a win. If I put Nick out there to try to get a record and he gets hurt, that's being silly. Records are meant to broken when they're supposed to be broken."

The backup quarterback connected three times with Riley Cooper to become the seventh passer in NFL history with seven TD tosses in a game. Peyton Manning did it for Denver on opening night this season against Baltimore.

Foles also threw scoring passes to Brent Celek, Zach Ertz, LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson as the Eagles (4-5) looked nothing like the offense that failed to score a touchdown in each of the past two weeks.

The other players to reach the record are Burk, Sid Luckman, George Blanda, Y.A. Tittle and Joe Kapp. Burk did it for the Eagles in 1954 against Washington.

"A couple people came up to me and said that I tied the record with seven touchdowns," Foles said. "It's a great honor. Hats off to our guys for doing a great job."

Here are five things to take away from the Eagles victory over the Raiders:

BOUNCE-BACK PERFORMANCE: Foles was coming off a historically ineffective performance two weeks ago against Dallas when he threw for 80 yards on 29 passes — the eighth-lowest total in the last 50 years by an NFL quarterback with that many passes. After sitting out last week with a concussion, Foles looked like a completely different quarterback against the Raiders, throwing scoring passes on his first four drives.

"I slowed everything down," he said. "I understood what we were trying to do. I wasn't trying to make too big of plays. Obviously there are going to be times when big plays need to be made, but I was trying to do what I did all week during practice and just carrying that onto the field."

EMPTY YARDS: With the Eagles scoring so quickly, the Raiders managed to run 92 plays and gain 560 yards — the third-most in their history. It was also the ninth-most yards gained by a losing team since the 1970 merger and third most in that span by a team that scored 20 or fewer points. That's why quarterback Terrelle Pryor saw little positive to take from the performance despite throwing for 288 yards and running for 94 more.

"It's embarrassing," Pryor said. "I hate losing. It's not acceptable to me and I don't like it. All the guys in here agree with me. We have to do something about it instead of tanking it."

RUNNING RILEY: After a slow start to the season with eight catches and one TD in the first five games, Cooper has hit his stride in recent weeks. He had five catches for 139 yards Sunday and became the first Eagles player with three TD catches in a game since Kevin Curtis in 2007. Cooper has 17 catches for 360 yards and four touchdowns over the last four games.

"It's definitely fun when you feel like you're contributing," Cooper said. "That's the biggest thing. I don't want to get 1,000 yards every game, I don't want multiple touchdowns every game, I just want to contribute and be there for my teammates."

HUMBLED HAYDEN: Raiders rookie cornerback D.J. Hayden had a rough day as Foles repeatedly picked on him in coverage. He was beaten by Cooper for a 17-yard touchdown and a 63-yard touchdown on successive plays run by the Eagles early in the second quarter. IMPROVING DEFENSE: After allowing 34.5 points per game the first four weeks, the Eagles have held their last five opponents to 21 points the last five games. The only other team to be so stingy in that span is undefeated Kansas City.

"I just thought that we executed well today," safety Nate Allen said. "Guys made plays when we needed to and got off the field on some big third downs. Yeah, main thing is we executed well and played well as a defense."

UK business group makes case for staying in EU


LONDON (AP) — Britain's main business group concluded Monday that the benefits of staying in the European Union outweigh the costs, though reforms are urgently needed for that to remain in the national interest.

The Confederation of British Industry released research showing EU membership was worth between 62 billion pounds and 78 billion pounds ($99 billion to $124 billion) annually — about 4 percent to 5 percent of the country's GDP. But the business group warned about mission creep in the 28-nation bloc, particularly in the areas of health and safety and welfare legislation.

"There is a growing unease about the creeping extension of EU authority," CBI Director-General John Cridland said. "Europe has to become more open, competitive and outward-looking if we are to grow and create opportunities and jobs for all our citizens."

Still the organization concluded that Britain is better off in a reformed EU than "outside with no influence." The group said membership is worth 3,000 pounds annually to every household in this country.

Cridland says the EU must modernize and secure trade deals with the United States, Japan and others.

Gone are the days when you needed to visit a Google office in person to pick up a pair of Explorer Edition spectacles. Following the recent expansion of the wearable project, which allowed existing owners to invite up to three friends or relatives to take that $1,500 step into the future, it's been possible for new customers to have their glasses shipped to them, just like any commercial product. What hasn't changed, however, is Google's desire to influence these users' first impressions of the device by giving them a highly personalized introduction. Soon after Phil Nickinson of Android Central received his invite-only Google Glass, he got a phone call asking him to join a personal 45-minute Hangout to take him through the "entire setup process" and tell him "about the history of Glass along the way." These calls are a sensible move on Google's part, no doubt, and likely very helpful to new owners, but they also suggest that Glass may still be a little too complicated to ship with nothing but a Getting Started PDF and a legal disclaimer.
