All kids want to be astronauts when they grow up, but very few of them live out that dream. Thad Roberts not only rediscovered that dream later in life, but took a gigantic leap forward in realizing it when he was picked to work for NASA as a lab technician, diver, and jack-of-all-trades. Exiled from his family, estranged from his young wife, Thad seized the opportunity to remake himself as the confident, ambitious superstar he always wanted to be. But would he risk it all for one of the craziest schemes in history, stealing actual moon rocks from NASA?
Sex on the Moon chronicles the story of Roberts and his long journey toward fame and infamy, offering fascinating insight not only on the man himself, but the shadowy and incredible world of NASA employees. Mezrich crafts the biography with grace, revealing a subject both intensely driven and immensely flawed. The heist takes a backseat to the man who engineered it, and the book benefits from it.
By bookending Thad?s story with the mindboggling heist, Mezrich poses the question that drives the narrative: How will this promising young man become this mastermind? Answering that question makes for an interesting read.
