Money mattered to David Wright

One idea that was frequently mentioned during the David Wright negotiations, and which has been confirmed by some post-signing reports, is that it was very important for David Wright to make more money than Johan Santana?s $137.5 million deal and thus become the highest-paid player in New York Mets history ?out of pride.?

Which I suppose I understand on some level. What I don?t understand is why anyone would say such a thing to a reporter. ?If you?re Wrights? agents, don?t you worry about that making your guy look kind of petty and/or ego-driven? If you?re the Mets leaking that, aren?t you risking some amount of clubhouse harumphing by essentially telling one player that the other wanted to top him?

Probably not the biggest deal in the world. After I tweeted about all of this, wondering if it would be awkward, one of my tweeps made a very logical point:

?

Or, if Curacao is not for sale, they just have a money fight.

Suicide bomber wounds key Pakistan Taliban commander, kills 6

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan (Reuters) - A suicide bomber wounded a senior Taliban commander and killed six people on Thursday in a market in a northwestern Pakistani region on the Afghan border, a spokesman for the commander and police said.

Maulvi Nazir Wazir, also known as Mullah Nazir, was wounded in the attack at the main market of Wana, the capital of the South Waziristan region. It was not immediately clear who was behind the attack or the extent of Nazir's wounds.

The blast destroyed Nazir's vehicle, killed six people and injured 12, said Maulana Amir Nawaz, a spokesman for Nazir.

"Nazir is a very important commander with the support of his tribe," said Mansur Khan Mahsud, the director of research at the Islamabad-based FATA Research Centre.

Pakistan's semi-autonomous Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), are dominated by ethnic Pashtun tribes, some of which have sheltered and supported militants over decades of conflict in neighboring Afghanistan.

Nazir's faction is one of four major Taliban groups that joined the al Qaeda-brokered Shura-e-Murakeba alliance late last year. The others are Hafiz Gul Bahadar's group, the Haqqani Network and the Pakistani Taliban led by Hakimullah Mehsud.

Nazir's group has previously clashed with other Taliban fighters during a struggle for leadership.

There are many divisions among the Pakistan Taliban leadership that have led to clashes. But despite the rivalries, analysts said the Taliban are unlikely to splinter as that would make them an easier target for the powerful Pakistani army.

New home activity soars 51.5% | Inside Real Estate News

The Angelina model by Richmond Homes in Castle Rock ranges in size from 2,100 square feet to 3,100 square feet and is priced from the mid-$300,000s.

Builders from Boulder to Castle Rock pulled 4,581 permits for new homes in the first 10 months of the year, almost a 55 percent jump from same period in 2011, according to a report released today.

The report by the Home Builders Association of Metro Denver, also showed that builders pulled 446 permits for single-family, detached homes in October, a 70.2 percent increase from the 262 in October 2011.

October marked the 18th consecutive month that home sales activity increased from the same month a year earlier, said Jeff Whiton, CEO and executive director of the association.

In the first 10 months of last year, builders pulled 2,960 permits in the counties of Adams, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, Elbert, Jefferson and all of the municipalities in the counties. Permit activity indicates future construction.

?There is not much inventory available on either the resale or the new-home side,? Whiton said. ?In that respect, builders are simply responding to market conditions. Nobody has to worry about over-building and I don?t see much potential for price discounting going on. If anything, we are going to start seeing increases in new home prices.?

Indeed, builders may try to pass on increasing construction costs, some of it caused by hurricane Sandy.

?Those type of increases typically follow big natural disasters,? Whiton said. ?We experienced that after Katrina. Hopefully, it will not last too long and will not cause a huge spike in prices.?

The theory is that construction materials will be flowing to the East Coast where Sandy ravaged buildings and homes, causing potential shortages and driving up prices elsewhere.

?That is the way many people view it,? Whiton said. ?Of course, we are a long way from New Jersey and New York.?

The cost of material and labor also are rising because of increased demand, Whiton said.

The report also showed that Richmond American Homes of Colorado and Century Communities continue to be the two top builders in the metro area, having pulled 902 and 532 permits, respectively, in the first 10 months of the year. Richmond is part of Denver-based M.D.C. Holdings Inc., one of the nation?s largest home builders.

The 11 Most Important Guns in History

China had developed a wide variety of gunpowder weapons known as "fire lances" and "fire dragons," as well as flamethrowers and fireworks, as far back as the 10th century. The first true firearms that used gunpowder to launch a projectile can be dated to the Yuan Dynasty in the 13th century. These included bronze hand cannons, which could be held by one man and touched off by another. The range was short and accuracy poor, but the smoke, fire, and roar must have intimidated opponents of the time.

Creativity and Affect | Self Improvement & Personal Growth ...

Creativity and Affect

The authors of this volume attempt to cohere the field of creativity and affect in a scholarly fashion by categorizing and characterizing some of its major features, including environmental influences; underlying processes; specific affective states; the role of atypical or pathological personalities; unconscious processes; physiological components; proactive and reactive stimuli; intrinsic motivation; eminence versus everyday creativity; and testing of assessing the affective component of creativity. The authors also examine and discuss the role that emotions, feelings and moods play in the creative process. This volume also provides a vehicle for students and psychotherapists, with which they can fully appreciate the feelings generated by the creative process and the various stages of it. How does a creator feel during its more mundane phases? Can he or she tolerate the frustration of failing and being unsuccessful most of the time? What is the real joy of achievement, success, and ultimate acceptance by ones peers in a given field? Do we have to exhibit major psychopathological features in order to achieve eminence in specific fields? What is the role of mind altering substances, mood disorders, and the like? This volume answers these questions and more. Author: Shaw, Melvin P./ Runco, Mark A./ Shaw, Melvin P. behave leonore: Shopping and Product Reviews: Will Traditional ...

The popularity of online shopping has been seen by many as a threat to the existence of traditional shopping. Their argument is based on the recent widespread closure of established brands like Sears and Best Buy. But can we really say that traditional shopping is dying?

In 2011, even though the U.S economy was sluggish, shopping grew by 15% over the previous year. In addition, about 35% of Americans now have smartphones which enable them to purchase goods and services over the internet and this figure is expected to rise significantly in subsequent years. In actual fact, about half of smartphone users have used their phones for one purchase or the other. On Christmas day of 2011 alone, about 6.8 million iOs and Android smartphones were activated. Top internet retailer, Amazon, recorded a whooping net sale of $48.08 billion in 2011 which represents 40.6% increase over $32.20 billion recorded in 2010. This figure is expected to rise in 2012 and subsequent years. What then is the implication of all these to physical retailing?

Since many people now decide to shop over the internet due to the benefits derivable in doing so like convenience, easy access to market, price comparison, avoidance of crowd, better prices and so on, can we really say that that the traditional way of shopping is being threatened? In my own opinion, technology will enhance the traditional method and not kill it. The popularity of video cassette recorder (VCR) in the 80's was seen by many as a threat to movie theaters then, but today, the film industry has been strengthened by the new technology and the demand for films has increased.

Moreover, when the email became very popular, a lot people thought that the traditional postal service would die, but today, it is waxing stronger. The point I'm driving at here is that, if traditional shop owners can embrace new technology, shopping on the internet would not be a threat to them but a blessing.

If physical retailers can monitor shopping behavior through the use of Wi-Fi signals from smartphones, they would be able to compete favorably in a fast-changing world. They can use technology to measure loyalty, make better staffing decisions, improve store layouts, reduce wait times in checkout lines and so on. Online shopping has come to stay but it is not a threat to traditional shopping because many consumers still value some of its features like quality of customer service, the experience of trying and buying products, how products are displayed and so on.

Manziel leads Aggies over Tigers 59-29

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) ? Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin watched Johnny Manziel turn in another strong performance, and then went to work campaigning for his redshirt freshman quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy.

Manziel threw for 372 yards and three touchdowns and ran for two more scores as No. 9 Texas A&M handled Missouri 59-29 on Saturday night.

No freshman has ever won the award given to college football's top player.

"I think the voters are going to recognize (the numbers)," Sumlin said of Manziel, who has 4,600 yards of total offense. "It doesn't matter what year you are when you're talking about those numbers and the league we are (in), I think tells you all you need to know."

The Aggies (10-2, 6-2 SEC) scored touchdowns on their first six drives to build a 42-7 halftime lead and coast to their first 10-win season since 1998.

"That's something that nobody can ever take from them, and it was real important for them to accomplish that," Sumlin said of reaching double digit wins.

About the only drama in this one came when Manziel was shaken up on a tackle at the end of a run in the first quarter.

"You worry, but just talking with him and talking with our medical people we knew it wasn't very severe pretty quickly," Sumlin said. "He was the first guy saying he wanted to get back in there."

Johnny Football missed just four plays before returning with a brace on his left knee. And it didn't seem to slow him down one bit.

The Aggies were up 21-0 when he returned, and he threw touchdown passes on three straight possessions to end the first half.

He scored on an 18-yard run to start the third quarter, and added another rushing touchdown when he bulled in from 1-yard out early in the fourth.

Manziel added 67 yards rushing and completed 32 of 44 passes on Saturday. He has thrown for 24 touchdowns and ran for 19 this season.

The win snaps A&M's three-game losing streak to Missouri (5-7, 2-6 SEC), and will keep the Tigers from becoming bowl eligible for the first time since 2004.

"We don't act like this is just real unusual that they scored some points," Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said. "It's not. We're talking about a great quarterback. I'm certainly disappointed we didn't play better (but) the things he did to us, he did to a lot of people."

Backup quarterback Corbin Berkstresser started for Missouri with James Franklin out after having a concussion last week. He threw for 276 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Missouri's Kendial Lawrence had 16 carries for 87 yards and a touchdown to surpass 1,000 yards rushing this season.

"The last three years I've been here we always went to a bowl game," Lawrence said. "So this is tough to end this way."

After Manziel's touchdown run in the third, Taylor Bertolet hit a 50-yard field goal.

L'Damian Washington got in front of the defense on a 74-yard catch and run near the end of the third quarter to cut A&M's lead to 52-16. Berkstresser tossed another touchdown with about seven minutes left.

Manziel was intercepted by E.J. Gaines late in the third quarter, and the Tigers capitalized on that turnover with a 1-yard run by Berkstresser early in the fourth.

Manziel's last touchdown run came with about 12 minutes left to extend Texas A&M's lead to 59-23. He returned for one play of the next drive before being going to the bench to a round of applause as he flashed the Aggies' 'Gig 'Em' sign.

The Aggies are hoping that Saturday's performance will give Manziel a final push before Heisman voting closes. A group a fans unfurled a homemade sign that read (hash)heisMANZIEL during the game.

When he was shaken up, Manziel was brought down by a tackle to his left leg and held his left knee. He remained on the turf for a couple of minutes while trainers checked him out. The crowd was silent for a bit before a chant of "Johnny, Johnny" erupted.

He was helped to his feet and walked off the field on his own power. Backup Jameill Showers went in for the next play and Christine Michael scored his second touchdown on a 38-yard run to push A&M's lead to 21-0. Manziel missed the first three plays of A&M's next possession, before returning to start the second quarter.

He capped his first drive back with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Swope to make it 28-0.

Texas A&M got the ball back after a fumble. Manziel was under heavy pressure on the ensuing drive, and escaped two diving defenders to throw a 5 yard touchdown pass to Mike Evans on the run.

His next touchdown pass was much the same as he wriggled out a defender diving at his leg and juked another defender before running to the opposite side of the field and finding Uzoma Nwachukwu to make it 42-0.

The Tigers used a fake punt to extend a drive and Lawrence scored on a 4-yard run just before halftime to leave A&M up 42-7.

Michael got A&M going with a 1-yard touchdown run on its first drive to make it 7-0.

A 2-yard run by Ben Malena pushed the lead to 14-0.

Carrom- Its Sitting Posture

By: SteffiCurdy

Indoor games are always fun and it unites the family hereby creating a great bond between the people. There are a lot of indoor game ideas that help you with the most favorable game selection. Different kinds of games and entertaining activities ensure that you will find the kind of activity you are keen on. Indoor games for youngsters are getting more fun to our younger generation. These games are the best games for small children, and they should be encouraged before they start off with it i.e. to play out with their age mates. You have better chances of watching over your children, and even directing them on how to go about some things when you play some indoor games. Not only youngsters, even the grown-up consider this to be an amazing game for its simplicity and straightforwardness.
Carrom is one such popular indoor game that unites the family either during the weekends or after the completion of lunch or dinner. It is one such game that is fun to play with. Any game will have an accessory likewise even carrom has some set of accessories without which the game is simply impossible to play. To discuss about the carrom accessories they include the following like:
Carrom board
Carrom coins
Carrom powder
Striker
These are the predominant accessories without which the game is simply impossible to play. Nevertheless there are some other set of accessories like carrom board stand, replacement mesh and score counter.
Talking about the functionalities, the main aim of the player should be to pocket all the coins before the opponent does. Spaced out from this, there is nothing much important factors interrelated with this.
Despite the fact that the game has no many rules to be followed, there are some tricks that will help the player to win the game easily; it is nothing but the sitting positions and they are as follows:
Sitting posture is extremely important in the game of carrom. If you are able to be accommodated properly on your bench or chair then only you will be able to take up yourself and very soon play the game comfortably. More often than not, a small number of players will put their bench or chairs away from the carrom board which will figure intricacy for the performer to play a part. As a result if the player legs traverse the pretend column then that will be considered as a foul and this is the major drawback by sitting in this pose. Hence the sitting position of the player matters a lot. The position of your body must be in a direct line track with the way of the striker anywhere it is stirring towards the direction to be played.
It is recommended that if you have to take a right position to sit then you need to take contented space linking to your chair and the carom board and further a partially portion of your chair you can hold.

Linux Mint turns 14, settles into young adulthood with Nadia

Linux Mint turns 14, settles into young adulthood with Nadia

Not everyone is super happy with Canonical and the direction it has taken Ubuntu in. Sure, its popularity continues growing, but so does that of an upstart distro called Mint. In addition to swapping purples for greens, Linux Mint ditches the controversial Unity in favor of MATE and Cinnamon, its two GNOME-based desktop environments. With the move to version 14, code named Nadia, the codebase of Mint has caught up to Quantal and its accompanying desktops have received some minor improvements. The MDM display manager has also been updated, with support for user photos and themes added. The most welcome change is certainly to the package manager, which finally runs as root -- meaning users no longer have to enter their password for every piece of software they install. Home Improvements: Fancy A Dream Home Get A Home ...

Guess where most people spend their time well it's their home. No wonder that people would like it to be perfect. So would most of the people as well. A perfect home depends on how an individual wants it to be. Perfection varies from individual to the other.

Most people love their home that's why it should be perfect in fact it should be reflection of perfection. If you love your home as well than it should be as you want it to be not as it is. If that is the case with you and you want your home to be your paradise but you cannot afford it then a home improvement loan can help you in your quest.

A home improvement loan is basically a loan offered to people who want to make major or minor changes to their home. The changes can be major or minor. Examples of the changes are

o Adding or renovations of new rooms

o Central heating

o Landscaping

o Adding of luxuries like fireplaces or swimming pool

o Plumbing roofing or safety repairs

It could be a minor change or a major change which can completely turn around your home. A home improvement loan offers you an opportunity to make that improvement to turn your home into a dream home.

There are various ways by which an individual can go for a home improvement loan.

Secured home improvement loan in this loan the borrower provides a security to the borrower. The security could be any thing either a car or any other asset of the borrower.

Home equity is another type of secured home improvement loan where the security provided by the borrower can be only his home for which the loan has been taken.

Home improvement is basically an equity loan where the security is essential for the borrowing of the loan. However if the loan amount is under ?10000 then an unsecured home improvement loan can be borrowed. An unsecured home improvement loan does not require the borrower to provide any kind of collateral to lender. These loans therefore carry a little higher rate of interest (about 1% - 2%) then the secured loans. This is the result of lender covering up for his risk factor. The usual interest rate is around 11.4% (variable)

Everyone in this world has home even people with bad credit history,
People like, CCJ's, defaults, arrears, late payments or people who have previously filled for bankruptcy. A credit score is given to all UK people who have previously taken loans. A score of below 600 is the one which causes the bad credit history. A home improvement loan is now available to these people as well.

Applying for loans is easy all the people who want to get the home improvement loan need to do is go online and fill in their requirements after they have found themselves a lender. If approved they will get the loan very quickly.

There are other benefits of home improvement as well which many people do not know about.

o If you go for home improvement it increases the value of the home which helps the owners when the owner wants to sell the house. It often helps in getting a better deal for the home as a furnished home would fetch a better price then an unfurnished one.

o For most people pride is the most important thing and a dream home would be the thing that provides that pride.

o For people with bad credit history it is an opportunity to improve their credit score if they follow the repayment plan as it should be

A home can be the best place to be once you come from your work if it is properly maintained. A poorly maintained house is no good to anybody so a home improvement is an absolute necessity. A home improvement loan is designed for people who are not financially capable of going for home improvement with several benefits by keeping the borrowers financial capabilities in mind.

(AP) ? It took only 52 seconds for the New England Patriots to turn this into a laugher.

That's how long it took to score three touchdowns in the second quarter and thoroughly embarrass the bumbling New York Jets 49-19 on Thursday night.

Even Bill Belichick couldn't compare what he watched to any other regular-season game in which he has coached.

"I was unfortunately on the other side of that in a Pro Bowl where they scored on a fumble, then an interception," Belichick said. "It doesn't take a lot to score like that ? defensive touchdowns, special teams, they can add up in a hurry.

"Nothing surprises me in the NFL."

Tom Brady threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score as the Patriots (8-3) took advantage of five turnovers and used a 35-point second quarter to cruise past the Jets (4-7).

"It was a great job coming in on a short week against a team that knows us really well," Brady said, "and playing all four quarters."

It was a scoreless opening period, but the Patriots then went on a touchdown spree despite holding the ball for only 2:14 as the Jets kept giving the ball away. New England's 35 second-quarter points tied for the fourth-most in a quarter in NFL history.

Disgusted Jets fans were chanting for Tim Tebow to play before the second quarter of this Thanksgiving showdown was over, and booing as the team left the MetLife Stadium field at halftime.

"Shoot, I don't blame them for booing," Jets coach Rex Ryan said.

New England, which beat Indianapolis 59-24 on Sunday, scored four touchdowns in just over 6 minutes ? including three in a jaw-dropping 52-second span ? helping Belichick become the eighth coach in NFL history with 200 career victories, including the playoffs.

"There's no coach I'd ever want to play for than him," Brady said.

Julian Edelman returned a fumble for a touchdown and caught a 56-yard pass for a score before leaving with a head injury. Wes Welker and Shane Vereen had touchdown catches, Steve Gregory returned a fumble for a score, and Stevan Ridley ran for a touchdown as New England set a franchise record with 108 points in a two-game stretch.

The Patriots improved to 19-0 in the second half of the season since 2010. They were 8-0 that year and last year, and are 3-0 this season after the midway point.

"It all happened so fast," Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo said. "I've never been part of anything like that, but I'm glad that we were on the right side of it."

Meanwhile, the Jets allowed their most points since giving up 52 to Miami in the 1995 season opener, and will likely have to win their remaining five games to even have an outside chance at the postseason.

"Discouraged? Of course," Ryan said. "I'll put it to you this way: We're about as wounded as you possibly can be, but we're not dead."

New England was without star tight end Rob Gronkowski, out a few weeks after breaking his left forearm against Indianapolis. It didn't need him ? not with the Jets fumbling and bumbling around.

Brady finished 18 of 28 for 323 yards before leaving with 2 minutes left in the game. He reached 3,000 yards passing for the 10th time, becoming one of six players to accomplish the feat. He also passed Dan Fouts for 10th place on the career passing list.

Tight end Aaron Hernandez returned after missing three games with a sprained ankle and had two catches for 36 yards.

New York's Mark Sanchez was 26 of 36 for 301 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Tebow didn't play at all ? revealing after the game that he has two broken ribs ? and stood on the sideline with a cap on throughout despite the occasional chants for him to get some snaps.

It looked as though this one might be a close one as both teams missed opportunities to score in the opening quarter, including Stephen Gostkowski going wide left on a 39-yard field goal attempt for New England. The Jets were hoping to boost their playoff hopes and keep some momentum going after a 27-13 victory at St. Louis last Sunday that snapped a three-game skid.

But this one got ugly in a hurry.

"That was crazy," Sanchez said. "I've never seen anything like that. This is a team you can't turn the ball over against because they make you pay. That was a great display of that today."

The Patriots jumped on a poor decision by Sanchez, who ruined a nice drive by keying in on Jeremy Kerley on second-and-6 from the 23. Gregory read the play the whole way for an easy interception.

Brady then led the Patriots on a 15-play, 84-yard drive that was capped by Welker's 3-yard touchdown catch on the first play of the second quarter.

New England was helped by a questionable neutral-zone infraction by Muhammad Wilkerson on third-and-4 from the Jets 49, and a facemask penalty on Ellis Lankster on second-and-10 from the 32 that gave the Patriots the ball at the 9.

The Jets made another costly mistake on their next possession when Shonn Greene fumbled on fourth-and-inches from the Patriots 31 and Gregory recovered.

Brady threw a swing pass on first down to Vereen, who zipped down the left sideline untouched for an 83-yard touchdown that made it 14-0 with 9:43 remaining in the opening half.

The Patriots were back in the end zone moments later when Sanchez fumbled on second down as he fell when right guard Brandon Moore's backside slammed into him. Gregory picked up the ball and ran it 32 yards for a score to put New England up 21-0.

And, the Patriots weren't done.

Joe McKnight, one of the league's top returners, fumbled the ensuing kickoff on a hit by Devin McCourty. Edelman grabbed the ball out of the air and scooted 22 yards for yet another score.

"That was quick," Patriots defensive end Rob Ninkovich said. "They were some of the quickest scores I've ever seen on any level. As a defense, that's a good sign, when we're putting good pressure on the ball. It then means something when the offense capitalizes on the mistakes we caused."

Edelman caught a 56-yard pass from Brady to make it 35-0 with 3:08 left in the first half. The receiver left the game early in the third quarter on a helmet-to-helmet hit by LaRon Landry on an end-around during which he fumbled. Belichick would say only "we'll see," when asked about Edelman's injury.

NOTES: Jets WR Clyde Gates also left with a head injury in the second quarter after a hard hit from Kyle Arrington. ... Ridley was called for a chop block in the end zone midway through the third quarter, giving the Jets a safety. ... Jets players ran out of the tunnel together, and first responders for Superstorm Sandy were introduced as a group before the game. Staten Island's Filipowicz family served as honorary captains for the Jets. John K. Filipowicz and his son, John C. Filipowicz, were killed in the storm.

Pixel wars: HTC One X versus Droid DNA

Android CentralClick the image above to enlarge.

When the HTC One X arrived earlier in the year, it easily took the smartphone display crown, blowing us away with its high pixel density and super-clear zero-air-gap screen. Fast forward six months and we already have a successor in waiting, in the form of Verizon's Droid DNA. The DNA rocks a 1080p SuperLCD 3 screen versus the One X's 720p SuperLCD 2, and that means it boasts a whopping 440 ppi (pixels per inch) compared to the One X's 312.

It shouldn't be surprising to hear that the Droid DNA produces incredibly crisp images -- after all, it matches the pixel count of the average HDTV.  But the One X's screen is impressive in its own right, despite packing less than half as many pixels. As you can see in our close-up shot above, the differences between the Droid DNA and One X are noticeable but subtle -- when viewed up-close, icons, text and other on-screen elements do appear crisper. The perceived difference isn't anywhere near as great as going from WVGA to 720p, though.

Pixels aside, the two phones are pretty closely matched in color quality and brightness, too. The Droid DNA's screen is ever so slightly cooler and a little darker than the One X at maximum brightness, though these aren't differences you'll  notice unless you've got both devices sitting side by side. For general day-to-day use, both of these screens look stunningly good.

You'll be able to see for yourself when the HTC Droid DNA goes on sale tomorrow -- stay tuned for our full review. In the meantime, be sure to sound off in the comments, and stop by our Droid DNA forums for more great discussion.

The Environmental Impact of Holiday Shopping ? News Watch

With pre-Black Friday events starting at the beginning of November and competition between major retailers more brutal than it has been in living memory this holiday shopping season is working itself up to be as much of a marathon as the 2012 Presidential Election.? By noon Christmas morning, we will probably all be heaving a collective sigh, regardless of the outcome, just as we did on November 7, just glad to have the confounded thing done for.

There?s certainly a madness to holiday shopping.? There?s also a lot of fun to it.? For those of us with kids, there?s the annual trek to the mall to get pictures with Santa?(perhaps in ugly Christmas sweaters).? There?s the frustrating, but ultimately rewarding, process of seeking out the perfect gift for the hardest-to-buy-for person on our shopping list.

And setting the marketing frenzy aside, there?s also the fact that the holiday season is ultimately driven by generosity.? It says something that during the busiest shopping season of the year, we?re all out buying things for somebody else.

But there?s also an environmental impact to this annual tradition.? And although I?m not a fan of online holiday shopping (endless possibility limits the outcome online) that environmental impact should play a role in the choices we make of where to shop, what to shop for, and how to clean up Christmas morning.

Running from place to place can burn a lot of gas, especially if those places happen to be miles apart ? which they sometimes are in big cities.? It?s more environmentally responsible to choose two or three areas to do your shopping.? Because I like to spread the wealth around, I suggest a shopping mall (for ease), a shopping street of local, independent retailers (for uniqueness and to support the local economy), and a discounter (for frugality).

Once we?re inside the stores, the choices we make can have a big effect on the planet we live in.? Packaging is a good friend to marketers and a major enemy to the environment; selecting gifts with minimal packaging (like an unboxed stuffed animal) over gifts with excessive packaging reduces the amount of waste the holiday will produce.

In most homes, when it comes time to open all those gifts, the flurry of excited paper-ripping produces such a major mess that environmental concern goes out the window in favor of expedited cleaning.? However, setting up separate receptacles for recyclable and disposable wrapping beforehand can reduce both the mess and the footprint of the gift-giving bonanza.

It is in some ways ironic that there is such a negative environmental impact from a holiday dedicated to the birth of an individual who 2.2 billion Christians believe was sent to save the Earth.? Regardless of whether or not we share that belief, perhaps we can make a small investment of time and caution in order to do our part toward the same goal this year.

Jim Vigmond, Hockey Fan, Pays $5,300 For Toilet From Maple Leaf Gardens Locker Room

Jim Vigmond, a Toronto Maple Leafs fan, reportedly paid $5,300 for a team toilet from the old Maple Leaf Gardens, ESPN reports.

The arena housed the NHL team from 1931 to 1999, and the toilet occupied one of the stalls in the home team's locker room.

"I just thought ... what a rare piece and just think of all of the people that have spent time contemplating in that dressing room what lies ahead of them," Vigmond told the Toronto Star.

The Ontario lawyer said he would like to use the porcelain throne for his own reflective moments -- with a glass of scotch and cigar in his memorabilia room.

Vigmond also wanted to buy the Maple Leafs' 1967 Stanley Cup banner, but the bidding got too steep, the Star reports. He said he was ready to pay as much as $10,000 for the players' potty.

The porcelain relic might be a prime conversation piece, but unfortunately, it doesn't come with the return of hockey; the NHL lockout remains in effect as bargaining sessions continue. ESPN cracked that if the labor-shackled NHL flushes its season, Vigmond will be ready.

The Maple Leaf Gardens toilet, however, is no match for J.D. Salinger's commode. The toilet belonging to the notoriously private "Catcher in the Rye" author appeared on eBay in 2010 with an asking price of $1 million, according to the Los Angeles Times.

HP's earnings fall 7 percent in Q4, take a massive hit from Autonomy writedown

HP's earnings drop to $23 billion in Q4, annual net revenue down 5 percentThis sounds scarily like the $8 billion write-off that tainted HP's Q3 balance sheet, but the source of the company's woes is different this time. It's had to take a nearly $9 billion writedown on the value of one of its biggest assets, the British software company Autonomy, following the discovery of serious accounting "improprieties." Nevertheless, fourth-quarter net revenue hit $30 billion, which is a 7 percent fall year-over-year, or just a 4 percent fall if you're kind enough to factor in the effects of currency. Of that income, the company managed to clutch onto $2.3 billion as profit -- a 3 percent fall compared to the end of 2011.

Poland arrests bomb plotter linked to Norway's Breivik

WARSAW (Reuters) - Polish authorities have arrested a radical nationalist who plotted to blow up parliament and had links to the right-wing extremist who killed 77 people in Norway last year, they said on Tuesday.

The suspected plot - to strike parliament when the president and prime minister were inside - was the first of its kind since Poland threw off Communist rule more than 20 years ago and is likely to put scrutiny on radical right-wing groups that are fiercely opposed to the liberal government.

Prosecutors said the suspect, a scientist who works for a university in the southern city of Krakow, planned to plant four metric tons of explosives in a vehicle outside parliament and detonate it remotely.

The plot had parallels with Anders Behring Breivik, the Norwegian who planted a bomb in Oslo last year and then went on a shooting rampage on a nearby island.

"The would-be bomber did not hide his fascination with Breivik. This should not be ignored," Prime Minister Donald Tusk told a news conference. "This should be a warning and a good lesson to Poland in the future."

"This is a new and dramatic experience. So far, we have had no experience with these kind of incidents."

Tusk said that investigators had found practical connections to Breivik too: the Norwegian bought bomb components in Poland, he said, and an analysis of his contacts helped lead Polish intelligence to the suspect.

Prosecutors said the 45-year-old suspect had assembled a small arsenal of explosive material, guns and remote-controlled detonators and was trying to recruit others to help him.

A video recording taken from the suspect, who has not been publicly identified, showed what prosecutors said was a test explosion he conducted, sending up a huge cloud of dust and leaving a large crater in the ground.

"He claims that he was acting on nationalistic, anti-Semitic and xenophobic motives," prosecutor Mariusz Krason said.

"He carried out reconnaissance in the neighborhood of the Sejm (parliament). This building was to be the target of the attack. He collected explosives and materials for detonation," Krason said.

SOPHISTICATED PLOT

Polish society is polarized between liberals and those who believe the country is neglecting its Catholic roots and succumbing to foreign influence.

Most right-wing groups renounce violence, but some on the margins are more radical. A rally in the capital, Warsaw, this month by right-wing nationalists turned violent, when youths in the crowd started throwing flares and stones at police.

Prosecutors produced evidence suggesting the suspect was planning a sophisticated attack.

They showed photographs of pistols and bags of ammunition which they said he had bought in Poland and Belgium. They also showed several vehicle license plates, both Polish and German, which they said had been found among his belongings.

They said the suspect had used his scientific background to assemble the explosives himself. "He is a specialist in the field," prosecutor Krason said.

Officials said that they had found explosive substances including hexogen and tetryl, as well as detonators that could be triggered remotely using a mobile telephone.

The dean of the Agricultural University in Krakow, where prosecutors said the suspect worked, said the man had never given any reason for suspicion.

"It never occurred to us that at our school there could be a person involved in such matters. There were no indications from his co-workers that anything unusual was happening," Roman Sady said.

Lyoto Machida shows off the greatest of all Movember moustaches

If you haven't heard by now, it's Movember, the month where men grow (sometimes ugly) moustaches to bring awareness to and raise money to fight prostate and testicular cancer. Lyoto Machida showed off his Movember moustache while sitting beside Anderson Silva at UFC 154, and it's a thing of beauty.

This pic was snapped while Machida was out for lunch on Sunday.

LOOK AT THAT. Cops and porn stars are completely jealous of Machida's moustache. Actually, all men should be jealous. That moustache is all that is right in the world. Joy, peace, bourbon -- they all exist because of that moustache. Thank you, Lyoto. Thank you for showing us the way of the 'stache.

U.N. Complaint Over Failure to Prosecute George W. Bush Filed?Against Canada

By Benjamin Wittes
Sunday, November 18, 2012 at 3:36 PM

No, you didn?t read that wrong. And no, this isn?t an episode of South Park.

The Center for Constitutional Rights and the?Canadian Centre for International Justice have filed a complaint with the Geneva-based U.N. Committee Against Torture?which oversees compliance with the Torture Convention?over Canada?s failure to prosecute former President Bush for torture. Last year, four?former Guantanamo Bay detainees filed a criminal complaint ?in Canada?alleging?torture?against the former American president. On behalf of the four former detainees, the two human rights groups issued a draft indictment, which is available?here. Their court filing itself is available?here. Nobody was too shocked, however, when authorities in Vancouver didn?t leap to jail Bush. Later on, the groups issued a report on the Bush case to the committee. And now they have filed a complaint?with the Committee on Torture, arguing that:

Canada?s refusal to initiate an investigation and prosecution of Mr. Bush upon his arrival in Canada and the decision of the Attorney General of [British Columbia] to immediately stay the private proceedings brought against him by the Complainants has caused harm to the Complainants.

The Complainants request that the Committee find Canada in breach of its obligations under the Convention, and specifically that Canada breached its obligations under Articles 5 (2), 6 (1) and 7 (1) of the Torture Convention.

The Complainants further request that the Committee seek an explanation of the actions taken by the various federal and provincial officials involved in the decisions not to initiate an investigation against Mr. Bush and to stay the private prosecution lodged against him.

More broadly, Canada must be called upon to review its policies concerning the Convention and the torture provision of the Criminal Code, as well as its procedures for dealing with torture suspects present in Canadian territory, and make any changes to its procedures to ensure that its officials place priority on fulfilling Canada?s obligations under the Torture Convention. In this regard, the Complainants recall the recent statement by the Committee in its Concluding Observations in relation to Canada?s compliance with its obligations under Article 5. Such changes should include a review of the level of funding allocated to universal jurisdiction prosecutions.

Should Mr. Bush return to Canada, the government must be urged by the Committee to set aside political considerations and take the appropriate legal steps to initiate criminal proceedings and hold him accountable if the facts and law so require.

Energy Security Problem Shifts to Asia

There is a heavy agenda for President Obama during his three day visit to Cambodia, Thailand and Burma. At the East Asia Summit he will join Asean leaders plus representatives from Russia, Japan and China, seeking common cause with his counterparts on issues affecting the balance of powers within Asia, as well as the United States' role there.

The question of Asian energy security ought to be high up the agenda.

President Obama will arrive with the assurance of a leader whose country is on its way towards the 'freedom from foreign oil' prioritized in his election night speech. The International Energy Agency recently came out to say that, 'In the New Policies Scenario... the United States becomes a net exporter of natural gas by 2020 and is almost self-sufficient in energy, in net terms, by 2035. North America emerges as a net oil exporter.'

This does not amount to US self-sufficiency in oil, as some headlines have claimed. Oil imports are supposed to be offset by exports of shale gas ? a US success story ? whilst the small print of the report shows US oil and gas imports continuing from Canada, whose production pushes North America as a whole into a net exporter.

Nevertheless, the worry that the US is dependent on Middle East energy is losing substance fast. 'Oil independence' may not be realistic ? the 2012 forecasts of the US Department of Energy bring oil imports down from 50% to 22% of consumption only in the most favourable combination of scenarios ? but the trend is clear. In Europe, too, the call on imports is not expected to increase. Middle East oil now flows west only for a few special situations, which are roughly balanced by Atlantic exports to Asia.

The net effect is that Asian markets will now absorb all the oil Middle Eastern exporters have available, and the effects of any disruption will fall on them. Their scramble for supplies will increase the price of oil worldwide, but will not lead to lines at gas stations in the US and Europe. This change poses policy questions both for the US and for Asian oil importers.

Some protection is offered against disruptions of supply to OECD countries by the Emergency Response Mechanism of the International Energy Agency, an OECD subsidiary, whose ?stocks would compensate for disrupted supplies. Non-OECD countries have had a free ride on this protection so far.

The United States military and naval presence contributes to stability in the Middle East and protects oil shipping through the Straits of Hormuz. This oil now goes east, not west, and the US security of oil supply no longer depends on it. Under these circumstances, how far will the US go to defend sea lanes that mainly benefit Asian markets? In any case, some Asian countries ? notably China?may not be happy to rely on the discretion of the US to protect their oil supplies.

Moreover, except for Japan and Korea, they are not participants in the OECD?IEA scheme for maintaining supplies during disruptions (though China and Korea hold the strategic stocks under government control). The US 'pivot to Asia' could include asking the big Asian importers to develop a regional scheme for managing supply disruptions, or to cooperate with the OECD scheme, as a quid pro quo for the US contribution to Asian oil security.

The US will suffer if the next disruption of oil supplies, falling on Asia, causes a storm in oil prices which will disrupt the world and US economies. Obama should bear this in mind as he considers the geostrategic implications of 'freedom from foreign oil'.
