Hillary Clinton movie mania: now CNN Films is doing a documentary

By Sara Morrison

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Filmmakers just can't seem to get enough Hillary Clinton these days.

CNN Films announced Monday that it's set to produce a feature-length documentary about the presumptive Democratic presidential front-runner for 2016 that will debut in theaters and on the news channel in 2014.

Charles Ferguson, whose "Inside Job" won an Oscar for Best Documentary in 2011, will direct. No name nor exact release date is yet known.

It's by no means the only Hillary Clinton-centered production in the works, either: NBC announced Saturday it will produce a four-hour miniseries based on the former first wife, senator and Secretary of State, with Diane Lane set to star. "Rodham," directed by James Ponsoldt, focuses on her earlier years. It has no release date yet.

Clinton is widely expected to run for president in 2016 but has made no official announcement.

CNN created CNN Films in October 2012. Its latest film, "Our Nixon," will debut on the network August 1.

Zenith Media Asks Ad Sellers To Buy Hangover ... - Business Insider

In anticipation of a goodbye party "1000000x crazier than any other going away party," a supervisor at media buying agency Zenith Media emailed a list of ad sellers asking/telling them to provide food during ? and after ? the event.

Buyers are supposed to be influenced only by audience numbers, not whether media people foot the bill for their parties.

Digiday's Jack Marshall published the email that has been circulating the agency world:

?Hello party people,

Looking forward to seeing you all tonight!

I have two favors that I hope you can help me with ? as it is James? going away party, everyone is already expecting it to be 1000000x crazier than any other going away party. Also, [redacted bar] is known to serve all cocktails in a 16 oz beer glass, so double the alcohol for everyone!

1) Would a few of you mind pre-ordering food this evening (delivery time around 7-8) to be delivered to the bar? Want to make sure no one gets too tanked at 7 pm

2) Would another kind saint deliver some Gatorades and greasy breakfast sandwiches to the agency tomorrow morning around 9:30 (I can be the point of contact)? As it?s Thursday and not a Friday, we can?t have work productivity start at 3 pm.. when the hangovers go away! We need to make sure our collective campaigns are on track! We have a dept of around 90 people?

Thanks in advance and see you tonight!?

That's pretty straight forward.

The Zenith employee even hinted at the necessity of the ad sellers, who depend on buyers' business, to provide the food gifts. "We need to make sure our collective campaigns are on track!" the supervisor writes.

Gifts are commonly exchanged in the media buying and selling world. In fact, there are sites dedicated to helping ad sales people exchange information about how to get buyers to make a deal.

Here's an example of a conversation from SellerCrowd.com:

Titans70:?How do you get into [Company, Exec 1 and Exec 2] are impossible to hammer down?

Proche15:? they'll take a mani/pedi

The party is tonight, so sellers still have time to plan out appropriate snacks for a department of 90 people.

Aurora remembrance, gun-rights rally collide on anniversary

By Gillian Spear, NBC News

A Colorado gun-rights advocacy group is set to put on a "counter rally" Friday in the same park as an event to remember the victims of the Aurora movie theater massacre on the one-year anniversary of the shootings.

Twelve people were slain and dozens more were wounded in the attack shortly past midnight on July 20, 2012. Suspect James Holmes is in custody ahead of a trial scheduled for early next year.

Friday's remembrance in Cherry Creek State Park in the Denver suburb is in conjunction with the "No More Names" bus tour, a drive put on by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's group Mayors Against Illegal Guns. The tour plans to visit communities across the country in the next several months to urge legislatures to pass gun-control laws.

The event, due to begin at noon local time, will continue until 12:38 a.m. Saturday, the moment a year ago when the shooting at the theater began. During the remembrance, survivors, community members and the families of the 12 victims will read the names of thousands of victims of gun violence from across the country.

A gathering of the Rocky Mountain Gun Owners is scheduled to get underway simultaneously.?The two events will take place at separate locations within the park but will be within sight of each other.

In an email sent to members of?the group, Executive Director Dudley Brown described the gathering as ?a peaceful ?counter-rally? with other gun rights supporters across the state to tell gun-grabber Bloomberg to keep his hands off our Constitutional rights.?

Rocky Mountain Gun Owners objects to the remembrance because they feel Mayors Against Illegal Guns' presence politicizes the event, a spokeswoman said.

?We don?t want to disturb any kind of memorial,? said RMGO spokeswoman Danielle Thompson. ?Since Bloomberg brought in his political agenda, we simply want our opinion present ? which is to preserve the liberties of law-abiding citizens.?

Thompson said that the organization will not have signs and does not intend on disrupting the remembrance. The group does not know how many supporters will show up, but is anticipating between 10 and 15 from their office will attend.?

NCAA rejects claims in concussion lawsuit

CHICAGO (AP) ? The NCAA says the safety of its student athletes is among its core principles.

The college sports association responded to a lawsuit that challenges its handling of head injuries. Attorneys asked a federal judge Friday to let them expand the lawsuit nationwide to include thousands of plaintiffs.

NCAA spokeswoman Stacey Osburn says the association "has been at the forefront of safety issues."

She says it has addressed the issue of head injuries through a combination of playing rules, equipment requirements and medical practices.

Osburn said Saturday the NCAA does not believe the legal action is appropriate.

The motion seeking class-action status was filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago, where the original lawsuit was filed in 2011 on behalf of former Eastern Illinois football player Adrian Arrington and several others.

Sports doctor Anthony Galea under investigation in Ontario

Anthony Galea, the high-profile Toronto sports doctor whose innovative treatments have landed him in legal trouble and garnered acclaim from hundreds of professional athletes, is under investigation by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

College spokeswoman Prithi Yelaja on Thursday described the investigation into Dr. Galea as ?active? but declined to elaborate, offering no details on how long the probe has been open or what spurred investigators to take action.

More Related to this Story

?For this particular case, I can tell you that there is an active investigation under way, but I can?t give you any more details than that,? Ms. Yelaja said. ?I can?t tell you exactly what we?re looking into.?

Dr. Galea pleaded guilty in federal court in the United States in 2011 to illegally transporting ?misbranded? drugs, including human growth hormone, across the border. A year later, Canadian prosecutors dropped charges against Dr. Galea that alleged he imported Actovegin, a derivative of calf?s blood used to accelerate healing of injuries that is not approved in Canada.

His lawyer, Brian Greenspan, expressed shock at the college describing his client as being under investigation.

In a telephone interview, Mr. Greenspan said the college has inquired about Dr. Galea?s brushes with the law and the nature of his practice periodically since his legal woes began in 2009, but that he would not cast those inquiries as an ?active investigation.?

Mr. Greenspan said Dr. Galea has satisfactorily answered all the college?s questions, and could not recall how long it had been since his client last corresponded with the college.

?It would be to my surprise, too, that he was being actively investigated,? Mr. Greenspan said, adding later, ?I think the person was ill-advised and ill-informed to have said something like that. But again, maybe they know something I don?t know.?

Dr. Galea had avoided the spotlight for the better part of a year until this week, when his name surfaced in connection with a Canadian trainer at the centre of an alleged track-and-field doping scandal. The trainer, Chris Xuereb, worked intermittently over several years at Dr. Galea?s west-end Toronto clinic, the Institute of Sports Medicine and Wellness Centre. Mr. Greenspan has said Mr. Xuereb was fired three years ago. Ms. Yelaja would not say whether the investigation stems from Dr. Galea?s past or was launched anew with the revelation of his link to Mr. Xuereb.

The college, which regulates doctors in the province, has never brought professional charges against Dr. Galea or imposed any restrictions on his licence.

London borough to ban public spitting

LONDON: If a proposal by British ministers and parliamentarians goes through, spitting on sidewalks or anywhere in public could land a person on the wrong side of the law. A council bylaw in the works could lead to a ban on public spitting, a common practice among South Asian communities.

The London Borough of Enfield has applied to secretary of state for local government Eric Pickles for provisional approval to the new law prohibiting spitting on the streets. In a letter, the ministers highlighted the reassurances given by Enfield council about the robustness of the proposed bylaws and the effective enforcement that the council intends to take. The bylaw was supported by Labour and Conservative groups on the council.

The bylaw makes it an offence to spit on the streets "without reasonable excuse". However, it would not cover spitting into a handkerchief or tissue.

"Spitting is a deeply anti-social and unpleasant practice. Spitting on Britain's streets is not socially acceptable," said Pickles. "In light of the cross-party support, we are giving the go-ahead to the council."

Councils across Britain have bylaws in place to tackle anti-social behaviour ? from dog fouling to urination. Ministers are of the view that public spitting falls in the same category.

"The public should be able to enjoy public spaces, their parks, streets and town centres, without nuisance or annoyance and bylaws can help prevent any nuisance to enhance public enjoyment of open spaces," the minister said.

Times View

Not only do we welcome this initiative, we strongly recommend that Indian cities should follow suit. Unfortunately, too many Indians tend to exhibit a deplorable lack of civic sense. However, where norms are clearly laid down and rigorously enforced, as with the Delhi Metro, a clear improvement becomes visible. Making not just spitting but even defecation in public illegal would go a long way in making Indian cities less of an eyesore.

NASA to Host Google+ Hangout on Hurricane Research Flights

WASHINGTON -- NASA will host a Google+ Hangout from several NASA centers at 2 p.m. EDT Tuesday, July 23 as the agency prepares to fly two unmanned aircraft over Atlantic Ocean hurricanes this summer.

NASA's Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel, or HS3, mission is a five-year project that first took to the field in 2012 from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility at Wallops Island, Va. HS3 is investigating the roles of the large-scale environment and storm-scale internal processes in hurricane formation and intensity change in the Atlantic basin. HS3 scientists will use two NASA Global Hawk aircraft during the campaign, one with instruments measuring the environment around a tropical cyclone and the other with instruments looking into the storms.

Participants in the Hangout will hear about the 2012 mission and preparations underway at Wallops for the upcoming flights. The HS3 lead scientist will explain how NASA will peer into hurricanes and a Global Hawk pilot will discuss remote flying over tropical cyclones.

Panelists for the Google+ Hangout are:

-- Scott Braun, HS3 principal investigator, NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md.

-- Tom Miller, Global Hawk pilot, NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center, Edwards, Calif.

-- Marilyn Vasques, HS3 project manager, NASA's Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif.

-- Brian McNoldy, senior research associate, University of Miami, Fla., Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science

Google+ Hangouts allow as many as 10 people or groups to chat, while thousands more can watch the conversation live on Google+ or YouTube. The Hangout also will be carried live on NASA Television and the agency's website.

Journalists who want to participate in the Hangout or ask questions by phone must contact Aries Keck at 301-286-4435 or aries.keck@nasa.gov with their affiliation by noon July 23.

NASA social media followers may submit questions on Google+ or Twitter in advance and during the event using the hashtag #askNASAHS3. Before the Hangout begins, NASA will open a thread on its Facebook page where questions may be posted.

Birds Teach The Air Force A Better Way To Fly

U.S. Air Force

A pair of C-17 Globemaster IIIs on the ground at Edwards Air Force Base in California, where "vortex surfing" is being tested.

U.S. Air Force

More than a century after the invention of powered flight, birds are still teaching us something about how to fly airplanes, with the Air Force studying the V-shaped formation of airborne geese as a way to save fuel.

The technical term is "vortex surfing" and it's already well known ? NASCAR drivers and Tour de France cyclists use it to "draft" off competitors.

The Air Force has been seriously testing the idea in recent years for its giant C-17 Globemaster III strategic airlifters as part of a program called SAVE (Surfing Aircraft Vortices for Energy). Air Force officials believe that flying planes in vortex-surfing formation could cut 10 percent to 20 percent off their fuel burn.

"People have been looking at how can we fly like birds probably since the earliest stages of aviation," Donald Erbschloe, the chief scientist at the Air Force's Air Mobility Command, told Foreign Policy in a telephone interview.

Erbschloe says that some years ago, a DARPA official suggested using a jet's autopilot to hold a similar formation. "That intrigued us quite a bit," he said.

Popular Mechanics explains how it works:

"The wingtips of every plane generate swirling coils of air called vortices. If an airplane is positioned in the right spot, the updraft from the vortex will help keep the airplane aloft."

"By riding that vortex, by surfing that vortex, we can transfer the energy that is lost by the lead aircraft and you can recapture some of that energy," says Erbschloe, himself a retired pilot.

Since the Air Mobility Command accounts for two-thirds of the Air Force's $9 billion annual fuel bill, the savings from flying its large transports in a more efficient way could be significant, according to Foreign Policy.

So why hasn't anyone thought of doing this before now? The answer, according to the magazine, is avionics and incentive: The jet instrumentation needed to keep the planes in a safe, tight formation is much better than it used to be. Now, tie that to budget constraints as Congress scrutinizes military spending.

Thanks, Bubble_Tea. I just wrote a series of three posts on how Jersey City became my home (I'm not a native):

How I Found a Home in Jersey City and Got Steve Fulop Elected Mayor, Part 1

How I Found a Home in Jersey City and Got Steve Fulop Elected Mayor, Part 2

How I Found a Home in Jersey City and Got Steve Fulop Elected Mayor, Part 3

Don't let the send part of that title fool you. Yes, I DID vote for him, and, no, I'm not delusional. But there's a point there.

I started this thread back in August 2011 by linking to this crazy-ass report: Jersey City: A Skate Park to the World. It was crazy when I wrote it back in October of 2007, but sometimes you just have to sketch out a dream to see what it looks like. Back then New York's High Line was just a concept and the Mana Contemporary complex in Journal Square didn't exist.

Things have changed. Mana Contemporary continues to grow and plans to put a hotel in their complex. No sane person would put a hotel there. But they're visionaries and they seem to have enough money to pay for implementing their visions. What they're doing will draw tourists to Jersey City and raise property values.

And they're only 5 or 6 blocks from where I proposed a hotel in that report. What they're planning to do makes the various projects in that report more plausible. When they've got their hotel open for business, let's re-evaluate that report and see how things look.

Oh, and we've got a new administration. Things change.

Photos from a fact-finding trip to Philadelphia. Took this one at FDR, the largest do-it-yourself skate park in the world:

Took this one a Pop's Skate Park, a small park in Northeast Philly. Police report an 80% reduction in crime in a two-block radius around this park since it opened two years ago:

National Sporting Goods Association, 2008 report:

MOUNT PROSPECT, IL ? Among sports and recreation activities that grew more than 15% the past 10 years, skateboarding led the way with a 74.1% growth, according to the National Sporting Goods Association (NSGA). Data contained in NSGA?s annual ?Sports Participation ? Series I and II? reports, which are now available, shows skateboarding grew from 5.8 million to 10.1 million participants between 1998 and 2007. Target shooting had the second highest 10-year growth, 63.3% to 20.9 million participants.

Other sports and recreation activities showing more than 15% growth over the 10-year period included snowboarding (41.7% to 5.1 million participants); running/jogging (40.1% to 30.4 million participants); archery target shooting (37.5% to 6.6 million participants); workout at club (27.5% to 33.8 million participants); motor/power boating (24.1% to 31.9 million participants); muzzleloading (16.1% to 3.6 million participants); and exercise walking (15.6% to 89.8 million participants).

?Skateboarding saw a remarkable increase in the last 10 years, due in part, to the television exposure provided by ESPN?s X-Games,? said NSGA Vice President of Information & Research Thomas B. Doyle. ?Much of that increase came at the expense of inline skating, which saw a decline of 60.4% (to 10.7 million) during the same period. In the 1990s, during inline skating?s peak growth period, skateboarding suffered similarly.? In 1998, there were 27.0 million inline skaters.

The city slipped a skate park into the plan for Berry Lane at the last minute but the neighborhood shot it down at community meetings because it wasn't within the design specs had been the community had settled on four years ago during a design charette.

So, the city was planning to spend money on a skate park. They can easily plan to put it somewhere other than Berry Lane.

Careful, no one have any fun with this guy around. Curmudgeon police alert. I've never seen someone get so angry and worked up about a skate park. If you panic about every potential minor inconvenience, maybe a city is not the best place for you.

What's great is that Vigilante always seems to think that everyone gives a flying f*** about his opinions.
Obviously some people do care about skateboarders (along with other kids of the city).

Cities that invest in their youth attract residents that invest in their city.

I'll be honest, I think when a city gets behind a skatepark it's more about focusing the energy of the skaters. Unfortunately skateboarders are seen as a nuisance to many companies and citizens because when there isn't a central area for them to skate, they'll skate everywhere.
I used to skate all the time, and in cities where there was a skatepark, the majority of skaters were there (when they weren't skating to/from there). In cities where there wasn't a skatepark, skaters would make do with any area to hang out and skate.

Most cities aren't overrun with young kids running around with their golf clubs hitting balls in front of businesses.

Philadelphia has made a major commitment to skateparks. The Franklin's Paine Skatepark Fund is at the center of it all. Here's their website:

Here's a little history of a 'guerrilla' skate park that some people built on the floor slab of a demolished factory:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/113688794/SK8-Chronicles

When the land was bought up, the slab was destroyed. But the developer hasn't gotten around to developing on the property. Probably got bit by the crash of 2008.

Anyhow, THAT's why the Enos Jones hockey rink got turned into a skate park. The skate boarders wanted to go somewhere, and that's where they went.

@user1111: Having a skate park IS a quality of life issue, one that impacts lots of young adults and families with kids more than 5 or 6 years old.

In case it's not obvious, this photo should clarify the location of the skate park in the previous three photos:

IMG_2659

That's Christ Hospital in the background.

I took those photos in Oct. and Nov. of 2006. The land was sold in 2007 and the developer busted up the concrete slab on which that park had been constructed. But the land remains undeveloped.

The skaters moved to Enos Jones Park and took over the hockey rink.

You can take the bbcourt down if you'd like. If we build a park specific to everyone's hobbies then we'd be pretty stupid. Besides you can actually skate in a park.

so the city can fulfill some people's hobbies, just not others

Exactly. Must I keep repeating it?

ah, so you admit your logic is inconsistent

No. I'm saying you cannot build parks to suit every silly hobby.

which is an entirely unfair and arbitrary policy because it means some hobbies get favors and others don't
