In her first act as Pacific's new chief administrator Mayor Leanne Guier on Friday directed Pacific Public Safety Director John Calkins to fill two vacant police department positions immediately.
Public safety is a cornerstone of government service, and it was important to me that we live up to that promise," Guier said. "Over the past several months, the Pacific City Council had asked ? begged even - that these positions be filled. Now, as mayor, I'm relieved to know that our police department is finally fully staffed again."
The shortage in police staffing during the past several months has resulted in a "increase in crime in Pacific, a decline in morale among Pacific Police officers and a widespread public safety concern among the Pacific community," according to Guier.
The hiring of two additional police officers returns the Pacific Police Department to fully staffed status, with officers in all positions authorized by the Pacific City Council.
I cannot say enough about the continued support that the Police Department has received from the City Council," Calkins said. "This immediate decision rendered by Mayor Guier will enable the police to ramp up patrol, better serve our residents, and get the department moving in a positive direction. It has been a tough struggle for the past year and a half."
The police department struggled under the 18-month administration of former Mayor Cy Sun ? who was recalled this past week ? weathering his refusal to hire for vacant positions, as well as several attempts to fire officers and command staff, including Calkins.
The new officers, who have completed the Civil Service qualification and background check process during the City's previous hiring freeze, report for duty at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
